What to Pack for the Costa Rica Birding and Wildlife Itinerary
All the destinations are in the rainforest with hot and humid weather and average day time temperatures around high 80s° F (31° C).
The only “cold” destination is Monteverde, which you will need a sweater for as it is up 1400 meters (4500 feet) in elevation.
MUST BRING: Rain jacket shell, comfortable walking/hiking clothes, swimsuit, board shorts, rash guard/sun shirt, mosquito repellent, lots of sunscreen, hat/visor, sunglasses.
Don’t forget a good pair of binoculars.
For shoes, you need a comfortable pair of walking, light hiking or trail running shoes. Even better if they are waterproof. If not, buy waterproof spray.
For the white water rafting, water shoes. They are light, not that expensive, can be leisure walking shoes and don’t take up too much room in your luggage. You can also use them for the hot springs.
If you are a photographer, make sure to bring at least a 300 mm lens for birds. We use Sony cameras and have a 200-600 mm and 300 mm with 2.0 TC. Also have a waterproof backpack.

Renting a Car
If you are visiting during the drier months such as January through April, we recommend a high clearance SUV. A 2wd is fine.
If you are visiting during the rainy season May through November, we recommend a 4wd.
For December, we also recommend a 4wd as it’s the end of rainy season, when the roads are at their worst condition.
