We’d always heard that Manuel Antonio was the best national parks in Costa Rica to see wildlife and beautiful beaches and we weren’t disappointed when we went. We stayed at the Hotel La Mariposa and spent one day at the national park. The beaches are breathtakingly gorgeous and I have to admit, one of the prettiest I’ve seen so far.
The wildlife on the other hand is even more amazing. Due to all the tourists that pass by there, the monkeys are 100% used to humans and know that they’ll be able to steal a snack or two (which we saw several times) from naive visitors.
I also saw my first sloth ever in the wild which I was stoked about. I even yelled out “OMG a sloth!” and everyone looked at me weird but hey how many people get to see a sloth in the wild?!
The most crazy thing we saw at the park was hands down a white face monkey eating a lizard. We were walking back to the entrance of the park and a family of white face were playing in the middle of the path.
All of a sudden, I saw a monkey dash behind us and up into a tree with something green.
As I got a closer look, I realized the monkey had ripped the tail off a lizard and was chowing down on it while the tail was still wiggling like crazy.
The White face monkey was having a feast, taking bites of the feet, the tail and eventually sucking out the insides. It just blew me away! I had no idea white face monkeys even ate meat and I couldn’t help but feel bad for that poor lizard being eaten alive even though that was nature in its purest and finest form. Survival of the fittest.
It’s a little scary to watch something that is furry, seemingly cuddly and cute being a voracious hunter. I learned to definitely NOT mess with those guys when they are hungry!
Here are some photos of Manuel Antonio National Park. We spent just a couple days there but it was two incredible days!
