La Fortuna White Water Rafting Class 2 & 3

The tour includes roundtrip transportation from a hotel in La Fortuna, all safety and rafting equipment, bilingual guide, bottled water, fruit and lunch.

The River

The river we went to was only 30 minutes from La Fortuna, a natural river connected to the Lake Arenal dam so the water is let in and out of the river everyday. This control of water means that there are always rapids all year long which is great.

For adventure, the Class 2 & 3 is one of the best things to do in La Fortuna and Arenal for older families and first time rafters.

The Rafting Tour

This river is not in the rainforest so the scenery is not as pristine as others in Costa Rica. The entrance is actually right off the road near a bridge. So you will be rafting next to some farmlands and you can even spot cars on the parallel road.

The first half of the river is Class 3 and you’ll feel the adrenaline rush through your body as you paddle through quick and long rapids. They were really fun but nothing super crazy which is why this river is so good for first time rafters or kids.

We took a break about an hour in and got out on the riverbank to have some fruit and take a breather. Our guide set up a nice spread of watermelon, mango and pineapple. Some cows even joined us!

Second Half of the Rafting

After that, it was easy peasy rafting. I would say we barely rafted the second half of the river to be honest. You can definitely feel a difference between Class 2 and 3 rapids.

This part of the Rio Balsa rafting tour was more like floating down calm sections of the river and I noticed that the scenery changed once we finished the Class 3 rapids. It was definitely a lot more “jungley” and we couldn’t see the farms or roads anymore. We also saw more birds at this section, like herons and egrets. We even saw a sloth in the trees along the river!

It was extremely nice to relax and enjoy the scenery during this part of the rafting. We even jumped into the river and floated down.

Video

Here’s a short video of the La Fortuna white water rafting tour Class 2 & 3 on the Balsa River. **This tour is no longer run on this river, it goes to Sarapiqui River which is way nicer than this one.**

Do you have a link to your partner who runs the Sarapiqui rafting tour? We have a group of 6 – including 4 teenagers 16-18 – looking to book a trip for April!

    Hello!

We will be traveling in July with our children (11 and 17). we are hoping to book the combo Balsa River rafting class 2 & 3 + Zipline. I looked under “choose your tour” and that combo is not listed. How can we book it?

    1. Sammi

Hi Souad, the tour is called “Adrenaline” Canopy + rafting Class 3

    Hello!
Does this rafting trip include transport between different cities?
I saw in another one of your posts that that the Pacuare River rafting tour had pickup/ dropoff between La fortuna and puerto viejo. Does this tour offer the same type of tansport? My husband and I have never white water rafted before and are unsure if the Pacure River rafting would be to advanced for us… we want to use the tour as a fun activity as a part of our journey between La Fortuna and Puerto Viejo =)

    Thanks!

This rafting trip (Balsa) does not offer interconnections.

The only one is the Pacuare Rafting which does interconnections between San Jose, La Fortuna and Puerto Viejo. Depending on the time of year, if you’re visiting now until Dec/Jan, the river is full as we’re in rainy season so it’s a solid Class 3, 4 and some 4+ but if you tell your guide that you are first timers and a bit nervous, the guides are excellent and great at navigating through the rapids to keep it more mild and put you on a raft with other similar people to go through more class 3 rapids and avoid the crazier sections

In case you’re interested, we do offer a $5 USD per person discount for the Pacuare river white water rafting

    Hi Sammy
We have an airbnb north of nuevo arenal and have a rental car. Will the tour company allow us to meet them at the Balsa River entrance?

    1. Sammi

Hi Jackie, the best option is to park your car at the tour companies office and take the transportation from there because where you start the river rafting is not where you end it and they aren’t able to drive you back to the start of the river since it’s the opposite direction.

      1. Jackie

That makes sense. Thank you. We will plan on that.
