Why Book With Adobe Rent a Car vs. an International Company?
Adobe Rent a Car is a 100% Costa Rican operated car rental company that has been in business for over 30 years.
They are the second largest car rental company in Costa Rica, offering all-inclusive pricing which means all insurances, taxes and fees are included in the final price.
With Adobe, you won’t have ANY surprises when you pick up your car. The total price you see on your confirmation will be the final total price you pay.
NO extra insurances, fees or taxes are added at the counter when you pick up your Adobe Rent a Car rental car.
What is the Costa Rican Mandatory Car Insurance?
Costa Rica has a mandatory car rental insurance which is called the Liability Protection, or PLI.
With Adobe Rent a Car, the PLI includes coverage up to $20,000 USD in 3rd party damages with a 20% deductible (Mytanfeet readers get 0% deductible), along with coverage of 3rd parties not in the car (i.e pedestrian) up to $100,000 USD with 0 deductible.
This PLI insurance is mandatory in Costa Rica and cannot be removed.
What Are the Other Car Rental Insurance Options with Adobe Rent a Car?
Adobe Rent a Car offers three insurances online when you make a reservation.
Liability (PLI) as mentioned above, is the mandatory insurance.
Car Protection (CDW or LDW) covers damages of the rented car in an accident, collision or roll over. In case of total or partial theft of the rented car, the Car Protection also covers any financial losses due to the theft. This insurance can be declined by using credit card coverage.
Extended Protection (SPP) covers $2,000,000 USD third parties damage, and it has $0 deductible in collision, roll over, and theft. It covers vandalism, windows, damaged tires (FLAT TIRES NOT INCLUDED), road assistance 24/7 and tow truck. This insurance is optional.
Third Party Waiver (TPW, offered ONLY in person)
The TPW, is offered ONLY in person by the Adobe agent and only to clients who decline the Car Protection Insurance. The TPW insurance is optional.
It increases your third party (Liability) coverage to $4 million USD from $20,000 USD. The Liability deductible goes down to $0 USD from 20%. This insurance costs $9.99 + tax USD a day.
Read exactly how Adobe Rent a car insurance works in this post.
Can I Decline Car Rental Insurance and Use my Credit Card Coverage in Costa Rica?
Yes, you can decline the Car Protection insurance when you rent with Adobe Rent a Car.
You need to provide proof of coverage in form of a letter from your credit card company. The letter needs to have the credit card company name, the cardholder name and the last four digits of your credit card number.
If you do not have car rental coverage from your credit card, then you will have to take Car Protection.
Please carefully read over exactly what your credit card company will cover, including but not limited to number of passengers, length of car rental period and type of car.
For example, credit card companies might not cover vehicles that carry 8 or more passengers so the insurance cannot be declined when renting a vehicle such as the Hyundai Staria as that has over 8 seats. Or some credit card companies may not cover trucks. Some companies only cover insurance for 30 days.
When Do I Pay For My Rental?
You will pay for your Adobe Rent a Car car rental reservation at the time you collect the car and sign the paperwork.
Adobe Rent a Car does need your credit card details to confirm your reservation. They will ask you for these details a few days before your reservation begins.
You can also add it yourself online via their secure system.
This information backs up the reservation.
How Much is the Deposit For My Reservation?
Adobe Rent a Car requires a security deposit which will be held for the length of the reservation. It will be released when the reservation is over.
Their normal deposit is $1000 USD and we have the following benefit for Mytanfeet readers.
$500 USD deposit for rentals that include Liability and Car Protection insurance or Liability, Car Protection and Extended insurance.
$750 USD deposit for all rentals that decline Car Protection Insurance (CDW).
Please make sure your credit card limit is sufficient for the deposit and the amount of the reservation.
Important: This deposit benefit is for those using a credit card ONLY.
If you use a debit card, the deposit is $1000 USD, no exceptions. No deposit benefit for those using a debit card. Debit card deposits can take up to 7 days to return to your account.
Can Adobe Shuttle Me To Their Office From the Airport?
Yes! Adobe offers a free meet and greet at the airport. Their shuttle will meet you at San Jose International Airport or Guanacaste Airport to take you to their nearby office to pick up your car.
Their offices are about a 10-15 minute drive from the airport.
When you exit the airport terminal, look for the Adobe agent wearing a blue shirt, holding a sign with their logo on it. The agent will bring you to their shuttle.
For the return, you will drop off the car at their office and they will shuttle you to the airport.
Please make sure to arrive at the Adobe office with plenty of time to arrive at the airport at least 2-3 hours before your flight.
For early morning flights, both airport offices receive cars starting at 5 AM. Please include a note that you require 5 AM drop off so Adobe is aware they should be expecting you for an early morning return.
Can I Get My Car at the Airport Instead of the Office?
Unfortunately, no. This option is not available, due to the small infrastructure of the airports.
I Land Late At Night, Can I Still Get My Car?
Yes. If you land late, such as after 9 PM and want your car, Adobe Rent a Car will stay open for you.
Please let us know in the “Other Remarks” section that your flight lands late and you want the car so we can make sure Adobe Rent a Car is aware.
What Is the Free Car Delivery and Pick Up?
Mytanfeet readers get free delivery and pick up to certain hotels near their office during delivery hours, dependent upon availability.
Please write in the “Other remarks” box the name of your hotel name and pick up/delivery time.
Hours of this service are normally 830 AM to 430 PM and it is first come, first serve so you must write a note to make arrangements with Adobe.
Depending on your hotel, Adobe will either send a shuttle to pick you up and take you to their office to get the car, or deliver the car directly to your hotel.
We will inform you which option is available and help you arrange the details.
Can I Use a Debit Card?
Yes, but there are conditions to using a debit card.
The Adobe agent will explain to you all the conditions to using a debit card. Then you will need to sign the agreement acknowledging the conditions of using a debit card.
Some conditions are that your deposit will take longer to return (up to 7 days).
Another is that you will NOT receive any of our deposit benefits. The deposit is $1000 USD for using a debit card, no exceptions.
Furthermore, the Car Protection Insurance cannot be declined when paying with a debit card.
If you own one of the cards that work as both a debit and credit card, Adobe will treat it as a debit card.
Adobe Rent a Car does not accept cash.
Can I Use Apple Pay?
Adobe Rent a Car does not accept Apple Cards or any type of digital card.
A physical credit card is required and the credit card holder must be present at the time of collecting the car and signing the paperwork.
What is Included in the Countrywide Road Assistance?
All Mytanfeet reservations have countrywide road assistance included.
This road assistance is normally only included in the Extended Total Protection insurance.
It includes assistance in situations such as battery replacements (if you leave lights on), if you lock keys inside the car and towing as well as 24/7-365 days access to their emergency line.
Flat tires are NOT included in roadside assistance. Adobe Rent a Car provides all the tools to change a tire.
You need to change the tire yourself and then go to any Adobe Rent a Car office to change out the spare.
If you need assistance in changing the flat tire, you can go to any gas station in Costa Rica and they will help you for a small fee.
How Do I Know That I’m *Really* Getting a Discount?
Please go to the Adobe Rent a Car Costa Rica direct website and compare the prices.
The Mytanfeet Costa Rica car rental discount is at least 10% off the car rental rate (base rate). The discount is not off of the insurance.
**All prices are set by Adobe Rent a Car. Blackout dates and conditions apply**
What is Adobe Rent a Car Changes and Cancellation Policy?
The Adobe Rent a Car cancellation policy is if cancelled in more than 72 hours of pick up time and date, there is no penalty fee.
If you cancel in less than 72 hours before arrival or don’t pick up the car at all (this is called a “no show”), the penalty is the equivalent to two days of rent.
For any changes, please contact us or Adobe Rent a Car to request the changes.
I Want to Know More About Renting a Car in Costa Rica
We have a ton of tips for renting a car in Costa Rica to help you decide if you should rent a car for your trip or not.
Please check our renting a car in Costa Rica guide. You can also contact us and we can help you decide if renting a car, or taking other forms of transportation is best for you.
Do I Need a 4×4 in Costa Rica?
It depends on where you’re going and when you are visiting. The main roads, highways and the city roads are paved but there are many places where the roads aren’t.
In the dry season, many places are fine to get to with a 2wd high clearance SUV.
Read our Costa Rica road conditions post to see what the roads are like for popular destinations and routes to see if you need a 4×4.
Feel free to ask us if you need a 4×4 or not, as we have traveled extensively throughout the country and can give you advice on the best type of car for your trip.
We also have an in-depth driving in Costa Rica guide to stay safe on the road.
Do I Need a GPS in Costa Rica?
Adobe Rent a Car does not offer GPS rental, but they do offer a Wi-FI hot spot.
The Wi-Fi hot spot is a portable Wi-Fi device, which can connect up to 5 devices and has unlimited data. You can connect your phone to it and use Waze, Google Maps, and other apps.
Our Wi-Fi benefit is if your rental period is for more than 10 days, you will pay only for the first 10 days of the Wi-Fi rental rate. The days after the 10th day are free.
Can You Help Me With My Reservation?
Yes absolutely! Our team will be happy to assist you. Please contact us and we will get back to you shortly.

Hey!
Awesome blog and information. After being dropped from 2 other car rentals (due to low availability) we decided to go to with Adobe from your recommendations. Rented a 4×4 and was impressed so far with the process. Will wait to see if they respond to my follow up email since it’s on such short notice from the other car companies.
Will keep you posted on what happens! Thanks!
yeison says
Thank you for your kind words Ryan! I haven’t received any previous email from you, I know that you probably send it to Adobe but can you be so kind to forward the email that you are waiting an answer. I will request a quicker answer.

Hi there,
we are about to book our car in San Jose but have a few last questions:
Will Adobe pick us up at the hotel so we can get the car at the office downtown?
Can we drop off the car at the airport just before we leave?
Thanks,
Petra
yeison says
Hello Petra!
Regarding you questions Adobe can deliver the car at your hotel in downtown San Jose at not extra cost and when you return the car you can either ask them to pick it up at your hotel or you can drive to their airport office return the car and then they will take you to the terminal.
Bany says
Hi guys,
Awesome website/blog – super information and has assisted us greatly in our trip planning! Both my spouse and I are traveling to CR at the end of February. Our itinerary is fly into La Fortuna/Arenal -drive to Jaco then stop in Manuel Antonio drive to Uvita and then stop in Ojochal and then last day in San Jose. I had a question about the drive from Fortuna to Jaco – is it relatively safe/easy in a small-sized vehicle? Also, the drive back from Ojochal to San Jose- what can we expect? It will be interesting to drive into San Jose as I understand it is quite busy and there are many one-way/confusing roads (hopefully it won’t be too bad)!
We are looking at renting either a Hyndai Grand i10 or the Hyndai Accent for 10 days – which one would you recommend? Are there big differences?
Also, as we are flying into La Fortuna, would there be a shuttle available to bring us to the Adobe rental office? Similarly, when we go to drop off the car in San Jose, will we be able to get a ride to our last hotel within San Jose?
Thank you in advance – you guys are one of the best/comprehensive sites on travel in Costa Rica I have seen so far – it’s making our lives so much easier 🙂

yeison says
Hello Bany and Doug!
Thank you for your kind words 🙂 Regarding your questions for the drive from La Fortuna to Jaco it safe just make sure to drive during the day and if you find some big trucks like the container truck always wait until you find a doble line so you can pass the trucks without any risk, you can do it with a sedan no problem at all. The drive from ojochal to San jose is very easy you will be in this road cost Costanera easy to drive again I recommend you to drive during the day because I believe this is your first time driving here, once you get to Jaco take the route 27 to San Jose and make sure to bring some cash there are like 3 tool booth in the way.
Driving in San Jose is like driving in any other capital, my suggestion is to avoid rush hour (7am a 9am and 4pm to 6pm) and without a doubt bring a smart phone and install an app call WAZE that is a game changer in San José every one uses it here and it will take you in clear routes (sometimes) and you will know exactly where to go, I use it every single time I go to San Jose.
Between the i10 Grand and the Accent I would recommend you the Accent I men the i10 works fine and you will make but the Accent has a bigger engine 1600cc vs 1200cc the suspension is better and the trunk is very spacious, my mother has one and she goes everyone with that car.
If you are flying to La Fortuna the Adobe Team can wait for you at the airstrip and deliver the car (BTW we have a 10% OFF deal with Nature air if you are flying with them), when you return the car in San Jose you have 2 options in the comments please let Adobe know the hotel you guys will be in San Jose they will pick up the car at no cost or if you flight our the same day you will have to go to their airport office, you will see the location on the MAP Adobe will give you it’s very close from the airport and then they will take you to the terminal (at not cost of course).
I hope my answers help you and if you would like to please email us the confirmation # and we will keep track of everything.
Enjoy your time in Costa Rica and please let us know if there anything else we can help 🙂
Bany says
Thanks so much for your prompt reply! We left a message awhile ago but it did not appear to go through so I am typing again! We had some follow-up questions:
We are indeed flying in to La Fortuna via Nature Air, however our connection flights are quite tight and I am just a bit worried that we could miss the flight. In that case, would you recommend a shuttle or local bus to Arenal/La Fortuna? And if we email you guys, would you be able to assist with notification to Adobe on the delay? Ideally, we hope to make all our flights and be in La Fortuna on time but there is always the possibility we might be delayed 🙂
The last day/night we will be staying in a San Jose hotel. If we can have Adobe come to the hotel to pick up the car, will we accompany them to finalize/complete the return or will this be completed at our hotel?
Again, many thanks for all your help!
B & D
yeison says
Hi Bany,
In case you miss the miss the flight you can take a shuttle they thing is that usually shuttles goes twice a day one in the morning one in the afternoon, if by any chance you miss it and you a shuttle email us right away to see if you can help you we have a good relation with shuttle companies. Also Adobe is always checking flights so in case you flight got delay the Adobe team will wait for you , in case of flight cancellations they will contact you in order to ask you if you want to keep the car, they are very good on that.
On your last day you can either ask Adobe to pick up the car at your hotel, or you can do it at the airport office it is 100% up to you just let the Adobe Team know.
Mark says
I noticed when I experimented with your My Tan Feet Adobe Car Rental widget, that although I was given a discount for the basic rental fee, when I checked WIFI they want to charge me for every day of my month long trip–not just the first 10 days. How to resolve that?
Thanks for responding.
yeison says
Hello Mark! As soon as you do the reservation the Adobe Team will adjust the rate they will charge up to 10 days, we tried to set it up on their system but they couldn’t find the way. NO worries we always double everything to make sure all our readers get what we promise them 🙂
yeison says
Hello Shawna,
Thanks for reading our blog! If you use our booking widget in this page: Costa Rica car rental discount, the discount will be applied automatically, and you will be redirect to Adobe rent a car car selection page. Regarding your question about what kind of car, we have readers that go everyone with the Hyundai i10 Grand or with the accent blue if there are going to be just the two of you, you guys will be ok like you will find some section on certain roads like the one to Monteverde or the entrance of the Arenal National that are gravel roads for a few kilometers.
Birds watching and hiking are very good in either monteverde or Arenal you can check this article to see some of the species we have seen here Costa Rica wildlife
If you can try to get a mid size suv 4×2 it’s ok like the Hyundai Creta or the Bego you will be more comfortable and secure on those gravel roads, I mean it is safe with a sedan but you will have to go slower.
I hope you enjoy your vacations and here are some articles about the places you mentioned that you might find interesting:
Hiking Manuel Antonio National Park
La Fortuna
Selvatura Park
Shawn Craig says
Hello!
My partner and I are Canadians traveling to Costa Rica for a small getaway (only 1 week, unfortunately). Given that we know that public transit might be hard for a very short trip and we don’t want to end up waiting around for packed buses. We stumbled on your blog while researching for an affordable car rental!
We are hoping to go to Arenal and Quepos and are mainly interesting in hiking, kayaking, bird watching — as deep into these parks as is reasonable for a short vacation. We would consider going to Monteverde, but might do it through a tour company if it meant we could keep to a cheaper compact car instead a more rugged one. Any thoughts on that?
Could you provide us a discount code? We don’t need a large vehicle, but we might need 4*4 I, and automatic for sure if possible…;)
Thank you so much for the thorough posts! They are very helpful.

Hello Suzanne!
Thanks for reading our blog 🙂 The Hyundai i10 Grand will be fine for all the places you mentioned, I went to the North side road to the Rincón de la vieja last week and it is ok for the sedan you just have to go slow, same if you would like to go to Monteverde the car will not be loaded with lots of bags so I think you will be fine, when I see groups of 4 + luggage on a i10 Grand I always recommend them to get at least a mid size SUV but if you are a solo traveler it will work.
Then the phone work for local and international phone calls it comes with one hour of credit for local calls (like 7 minutes for international calls) and you can put credit on almost every single grocery store in the country. If you have a smart unlock phone bring it it will work better than your Garmin if you use an app call WAZE, as soon as you land try to get a sim card its super easy to get them it cost like $5 + wherever amount of credit you want to put and the app its super helpful. Here is an article about how to get the sim card: Costa Rica pre-paid sim cards
In order to make the reservation just select the dates pick up office and time and then you will see all the options available. Please let me know if you have any questions
Suzanne says
I would like to rent a small car (if appropriate) for 23 Jan to 3 Feb from the Liberia airport. I am a single woman with little luggage so I don’t want an SUV, unless 4-wheel drive and high clearance is necessary to get where I need to go. I am looking at the Hyundai Grand i10 on the Adobe site. Would it do if I skip going to Monteverde on this trip? I would instead visit the beaches west of Liberia, a resort by Rincon La Vieja N.P., Lake Arenal (road on the north side), the San Jose area and Manuel Antonio N.P.
You mention a cell phone with the car. Is this mostly for emergencies? What I am wondering is if I should bring my i-phone (it is unlocked) and buy a sim card there, or leave it at home. I will probably bring my portable Garmin for home to navigate because buying CR maps for it costs about the same as renting the device from Adobe.
Shea Guthrie says
Will driving between San Jose and Arenal, then onto Nosara (Playa Giunes) and back to San Jose require anything more robust than a Hyundai i10? Arriving end of this month.
Also, do you have a direct phone number I can reach Adobe on?
Thank you for your assistance!
S
yeison says
Hello Shea! Technically you can go to all the areas you mentions but you will have to be careful because some sections of the road are gravel (Like the entrance of the arenal volcano national park, and some areas in nosara) If by any chance you can get a mid size SUV 4×2 your driving will be more comfortable and safer. The Toll Free number from Adobe is 1-855-861-1250.
Verne Friesen says
We have enjoy all the info your blog & website have given us! We just rented a car thru your site with Adobe selecting the Super Protection Plan & GPS from Jan. 9 – 20th. I believed then I would not be pressured with additional costs when we pick up vehicle. Is this correct?
Thanks again for help and advise thru your website and Blog!
Sammi says
Hi Verne, with adobe, the total price on your quote is exactly what you will pay, no last minute fees or anything. They will ask if you want the super protection insurance if you didnt get it but you can perfectly say no and they wont pressure you. Have a great time in CR

Thank you for the very helpful blog. My wife and I are planning our next trip to Costa Rica for August 2017. Our home base will tentatively be in Atenas for the 2 weeks that we are there. What’s our best option for pick up and drop off of a vehicle from Adobe? Is there the option of having them deliver and pick up the vehicle at the apartments that we’ll be staying at in Atenas? Neither of us are particularly interested in driving too close to the big city and prefer to take Uber or taxi when we are there.
yeison says
Hello John!
Thanks for reading our blog, I think that they can deliver car in Atenas at not cost there is a office at 17 kilometers from Atenas. Let’s do this please email us on our contact page the dates you are planning to arrive and then I will call Adobe and ask the operations manager.
