Make local food part of your trip

What is Costa Rican food like?

Rice and beans are everyday staples in Costa Rica, alongside fresh fruit, vegetables, plantains and dishes made with chicken, beef, pork or fish.

Gallo pinto is a familiar breakfast of rice and beans cooked together, while a casado brings rice, beans, salad and a choice of protein onto one plate, with the accompaniments varying from kitchen to kitchen.

Look for a local soda

Sodas are traditional local restaurants where you can try Costa Rican dishes in a casual setting, with some serving food from a counter and others offering a menu.

We enjoy including these everyday places in our travels, and our guide to eating at a soda explains what to expect before you sit down.
