Frequently Asked Questions
What are the travel times for the La Fortuna Monteverde taxi boat taxi?
These are estimated times, they may vary depending on your hotel pick up/drop off locations and number of other fellow guests.
~30 minute drive from La Fortuna to the La Fortuna Lake Arenal dock.
~1.5 hour boat ride.
~1 hour drive to Monteverde.
Is the La Fortuna Monteverde taxi boat faster than driving?
It depends. If you are driving and take Route 142 around Lake Arenal through Tilaran, La Fortuna - Monteverde drive takes around 3-3.5 hours without stops. There are some beautiful view points and attractions along this route, including waterfall hikes and local restaurants, so you can turn this drive into a whole day of fun and travel.
The La Fortuna Monteverde taxi boat taxi takes around 3 hours. No stops are included but the views are very scenic along the boat ride, especially if it's a clear day.
Where does my luggage go?
Your luggage will be with you the whole way, in the shuttle van for the ground transportation and the boat. If there are a lot of passengers and luggage, your luggage may go in another boat that's just for luggage. You can keep a backpack/purse or personal belonging with you during the boat ride.
Why is the La Fortuna Monteverde taxi boat a better option than going by land?
If you do not plan to rent a car, getting between La Fortuna and Monteverde is very tricky if you want to go by public bus. By public bus, it requires 3 different changes and that includes different bus stations. If you do not leave early enough or miss a bus, you may get stranded as there are limited schedules. The bus route is La Fortuna - Cañas - Tilaran - Monteverde.
The only other option for those without a rental car is a shared or private shuttle. Both are excellent options by land. Shared shuttles are better for solo travelers or those on a budget as it's cheaper for 1 or 2 people than a private shuttle. Shared shuttles include one 15 minute stop along the way and can take up to 10-15 passengers, so you will also have to wait in the shuttle for other hotel pick ups and drop offs. This service can take around 4.5 hours depending on the guest list.
Private shuttles are excellent to cut out the waiting time and have the entire shuttle to your group. Your driver can also stop at any place along the way for bathroom/food breaks, and you can even add a stop at a waterfall if you wish for an extra fee. You have much more flexibility for a private shuttle but it is much more expensive.
I'm staying at an Airbnb, can I get picked up/dropped off from there?
No, this service is only for hotel pick ups and drop offs. If you are at an Airbnb, we will help you find the closest hotel to your Airbnb to use as a pick up and drop off spot.
