Why Book With Adobe Rent a Car vs. an International Company?

Adobe Rent a Car is a 100% Costa Rican operated car rental company that has been in business for over 30 years.

They are the second largest car rental company in Costa Rica, offering all-inclusive pricing which means all insurances, taxes and fees are included in the final price.

With Adobe, you won’t have ANY surprises when you pick up your car. The total price you see on your confirmation will be the final total price you pay.

NO extra insurances, fees or taxes are added at the counter when you pick up your Adobe Rent a Car rental car.

What is the Costa Rican Mandatory Car Insurance?

Costa Rica has a mandatory car rental insurance which is called the Liability Protection, or PLI.

With Adobe Rent a Car, the PLI includes coverage up to $20,000 USD in 3rd party damages with a 20% deductible (Mytanfeet readers get 0% deductible), along with coverage of 3rd parties not in the car (i.e pedestrian) up to $100,000 USD with 0 deductible.

This PLI insurance is mandatory in Costa Rica and cannot be removed.

What Are the Other Car Rental Insurance Options with Adobe Rent a Car?

Adobe Rent a Car offers three insurances online when you make a reservation.

Liability (PLI) as mentioned above, is the mandatory insurance.

Car Protection (CDW or LDW) covers damages of the rented car in an accident, collision or roll over. In case of total or partial theft of the rented car, the Car Protection also covers any financial losses due to the theft. This insurance can be declined by using credit card coverage.

Extended Protection (SPP) covers $2,000,000 USD third parties damage, and it has $0 deductible in collision, roll over, and theft. It covers vandalism, windows, damaged tires (FLAT TIRES NOT INCLUDED), road assistance 24/7 and tow truck. This insurance is optional.

Third Party Waiver (TPW, offered ONLY in person)

The TPW, is offered ONLY in person by the Adobe agent and only to clients who decline the Car Protection Insurance. The TPW insurance is optional.

It increases your third party (Liability) coverage to $4 million USD from $20,000 USD. The Liability deductible goes down to $0 USD from 20%. This insurance costs $9.99 + tax USD a day.

Read exactly how Adobe Rent a car insurance works in this post.

Can I Decline Car Rental Insurance and Use my Credit Card Coverage in Costa Rica?

Yes, you can decline the Car Protection insurance when you rent with Adobe Rent a Car.

You need to provide proof of coverage in form of a letter from your credit card company. The letter needs to have the credit card company name, the cardholder name and the last four digits of your credit card number.

If you do not have car rental coverage from your credit card, then you will have to take Car Protection.

Please carefully read over exactly what your credit card company will cover, including but not limited to number of passengers, length of car rental period and type of car.

For example, credit card companies might not cover vehicles that carry 8 or more passengers so the insurance cannot be declined when renting a vehicle such as the Hyundai Staria as that has over 8 seats. Or some credit card companies may not cover trucks. Some companies only cover insurance for 30 days.

When Do I Pay For My Rental?

You will pay for your Adobe Rent a Car car rental reservation at the time you collect the car and sign the paperwork.

Adobe Rent a Car does need your credit card details to confirm your reservation. They will ask you for these details a few days before your reservation begins.

You can also add it yourself online via their secure system.

This information backs up the reservation.

How Much is the Deposit For My Reservation?

Adobe Rent a Car requires a security deposit which will be held for the length of the reservation. It will be released when the reservation is over.

Their normal deposit is $1000 USD and we have the following benefit for Mytanfeet readers.

$500 USD deposit for rentals that include Liability and Car Protection insurance or Liability, Car Protection and Extended insurance.

$750 USD deposit for all rentals that decline Car Protection Insurance (CDW).

Please make sure your credit card limit is sufficient for the deposit and the amount of the reservation.

Important: This deposit benefit is for those using a credit card ONLY.

If you use a debit card, the deposit is $1000 USD, no exceptions. No deposit benefit for those using a debit card. Debit card deposits can take up to 7 days to return to your account.

Can Adobe Shuttle Me To Their Office From the Airport?

Yes! Adobe offers a free meet and greet at the airport. Their shuttle will meet you at San Jose International Airport or Guanacaste Airport to take you to their nearby office to pick up your car.

Their offices are about a 10-15 minute drive from the airport.

When you exit the airport terminal, look for the Adobe agent wearing a blue shirt, holding a sign with their logo on it. The agent will bring you to their shuttle.

For the return, you will drop off the car at their office and they will shuttle you to the airport.

Please make sure to arrive at the Adobe office with plenty of time to arrive at the airport at least 2-3 hours before your flight.

For early morning flights, both airport offices receive cars starting at 5 AM. Please include a note that you require 5 AM drop off so Adobe is aware they should be expecting you for an early morning return.

Can I Get My Car at the Airport Instead of the Office?

Unfortunately, no. This option is not available, due to the small infrastructure of the airports.

I Land Late At Night, Can I Still Get My Car?

Yes. If you land late, such as after 9 PM and want your car, Adobe Rent a Car will stay open for you.

Please let us know in the “Other Remarks” section that your flight lands late and you want the car so we can make sure Adobe Rent a Car is aware.

What Is the Free Car Delivery and Pick Up?

Mytanfeet readers get free delivery and pick up to certain hotels near their office during delivery hours, dependent upon availability.

Please write in the “Other remarks” box the name of your hotel name and pick up/delivery time.

Hours of this service are normally 830 AM to 430 PM and it is first come, first serve so you must write a note to make arrangements with Adobe.

Depending on your hotel, Adobe will either send a shuttle to pick you up and take you to their office to get the car, or deliver the car directly to your hotel.

We will inform you which option is available and help you arrange the details.

Can I Use a Debit Card?

Yes, but there are conditions to using a debit card.

The Adobe agent will explain to you all the conditions to using a debit card. Then you will need to sign the agreement acknowledging the conditions of using a debit card.

Some conditions are that your deposit will take longer to return (up to 7 days).

Another is that you will NOT receive any of our deposit benefits. The deposit is $1000 USD for using a debit card, no exceptions.

Furthermore, the Car Protection Insurance cannot be declined when paying with a debit card.

If you own one of the cards that work as both a debit and credit card, Adobe will treat it as a debit card.

Adobe Rent a Car does not accept cash.

Can I Use Apple Pay?

Adobe Rent a Car does not accept Apple Cards or any type of digital card.

A physical credit card is required and the credit card holder must be present at the time of collecting the car and signing the paperwork.

What is Included in the Countrywide Road Assistance?

All Mytanfeet reservations have countrywide road assistance included.

This road assistance is normally only included in the Extended Total Protection insurance.

It includes assistance in situations such as battery replacements (if you leave lights on), if you lock keys inside the car and towing as well as 24/7-365 days access to their emergency line.

Flat tires are NOT included in roadside assistance. Adobe Rent a Car provides all the tools to change a tire.

You need to change the tire yourself and then go to any Adobe Rent a Car office to change out the spare.

If you need assistance in changing the flat tire, you can go to any gas station in Costa Rica and they will help you for a small fee.

How Do I Know That I’m *Really* Getting a Discount?

Please go to the Adobe Rent a Car Costa Rica direct website and compare the prices.

The Mytanfeet Costa Rica car rental discount is at least 10% off the car rental rate (base rate). The discount is not off of the insurance.

**All prices are set by Adobe Rent a Car. Blackout dates and conditions apply**

What is Adobe Rent a Car Changes and Cancellation Policy?

The Adobe Rent a Car cancellation policy is if cancelled in more than 72 hours of pick up time and date, there is no penalty fee.

If you cancel in less than 72 hours before arrival or don’t pick up the car at all (this is called a “no show”), the penalty is the equivalent to two days of rent.

For any changes, please contact us or Adobe Rent a Car to request the changes.

I Want to Know More About Renting a Car in Costa Rica

We have a ton of tips for renting a car in Costa Rica to help you decide if you should rent a car for your trip or not.

Please check our renting a car in Costa Rica guide. You can also contact us and we can help you decide if renting a car, or taking other forms of transportation is best for you.

Do I Need a 4×4 in Costa Rica?

In the dry season, many places are fine to get to with a 2wd high clearance SUV.

Read our Costa Rica road conditions post to see what the roads are like for popular destinations and routes to see if you need a 4×4.

Feel free to ask us if you need a 4×4 or not, as we have traveled extensively throughout the country and can give you advice on the best type of car for your trip.

We also have an in-depth driving in Costa Rica guide to stay safe on the road.

Do I Need a GPS in Costa Rica?

Adobe Rent a Car does not offer GPS rental, but they do offer a Wi-FI hot spot.

The Wi-Fi hot spot is a portable Wi-Fi device, which can connect up to 5 devices and has unlimited data. You can connect your phone to it and use Waze, Google Maps, and other apps.

Our Wi-Fi benefit is if your rental period is for more than 10 days, you will pay only for the first 10 days of the Wi-Fi rental rate. The days after the 10th day are free.

Can You Help Me With My Reservation?

Yes absolutely! Our team will be happy to assist you. Please contact us and we will get back to you shortly.

I’ve send your blog to several friends who are travelling to Costa Rica in March 2017…and recommended they check out the discounted rates offered through Adobe.
Quick Question……I’m staying in the Tamarindo area for 4 days (will do quite a bit of exploring) before heading to Monteverde and Arenal.
When in Costa Rica a few years ago (Manual Antonio area) we had a car…would I need to get a 4×4 for this trip? Heard the roads around Monteverde are less than ideal.

Hi Jim, thanks for reading our blog and sharing it! I would recommend getting a 4×2 at least because the road is pretty bumpy and you’ll be way more comfortable than in a sedan.

    Great information on your site!

    Looking for advice on travelling from San Jose to the following places for two Canadians;

    Alajuela
    Jaco
    Monteverde
    Arenal

It sounds like a suv is necessary for driving around Monteverde and Arenal, I’m checking Adobe’s website and I’m wondering what currency their prices are in, is it American?

If my credit card provides a deductible for car rentals in CR would I be able to decline their insurance or is it mandatory? Is the car protection fee mandatory? If you have to purchase that are you required to still pay the deposit when you pick up your rental?

    Thanks for the help!

Hi J, the currency is in USD and it is recommended to have at least a 4×2 for Monteverde as that road is unpaved and fairly bumpy. THere is a mandatory insurance which is required by Costa Rican law. The deposit is held during the duration of your rental and released after you return the car.

    Hi guys,

    We have 2 questions:

-Can we decline the LDW without a fee if we have full provincial auto travel insurance?
-What is your cancellation policy? I would like to know this prior to booking.

    Thanks,

Hi Suzanne, you can talk to Adobe regarding the insurance when you’ve made a reservation. Their cancellation policy is no fee if it’s cancelled within 72 hours prior to the scheduled pick up date or else there is a 1 day penalty charge.

    Hi sammi and yeison,
    Merry Christmas!

Thank you for the comprehensive driving guide. It gives me more confident driving in CR.

Here is my itinerary: SJO – Quesada – Arenal – Monteverde – Liberia

    A couple questions:
    1) Could we pick up the rental car in Monteverde and drop off at Liberia? Since I really like to take the taxi-boat-taxi to Monteverde.
    2) if not, how’s the drive from SJO to Quesada? from Quesada to Arenal? From Arenal to Monteverde Monteverde to Liberia?

    Thank you!

Hi John! Merry Christmas to you too. There actually aren’t any car rental agencies in Monteverde, the closest office is in Arenal. The road from San Jose to Quesada is nicely paved, it gets a little bit curvy and windy so best to go slow but it has some awesome views. The entire route from San Jose to Arenal is well paved, the road from Arenal to Monteverde is not paved and pretty bumpy. There is a paved road from MOnteverde <-> Liberia.

        A couple more questions. 🙂

Does high way 141 or 126 has better views?

Any good attractions around Quesada besides Poas and La Paz water fall? I am thinking to visit them on the way to Quesada.

What are the ways to support you? You guys are awesome!

We took 145 from Monteverde and it’s gorgeous! Great views of the hills and valleys.

There isn’t too much else on the way. Near Poas is the little town called Poasito, which is an awesome stop to try out some local produce and buy some souvenirs. And there is a great soda (traditional restaurant) we love near La Paz waterfall called Soda Las Ardillas. Great for Costa Rican food! That one is on the way from Poas to La Paz waterfall.

You can share our blog with others you think will find helpful or follow us on our social media! 🙂 We just really love when we can help people and they have an awesome time in Costa Rica!

Hello! Thanks for your helpful recommendations!

I’m trying to book a rental through your website with Adobe from 12/30/15 – 1/5/2017 for pick-up and return at SJO airport. When I book through the widget on your site, it actually turns out to be more expensive by about $60 compared to when I book it through the Adobe website itself ($370.44 vs. $311.64, respectively). I entered all the same information for both potential reservations. Any idea how to get the My Tan Feet discount? Thank you!

This is an excellent blog. I have booked the car with Adobe using the mytanfeet discount for Feb ’17. Thank you!!!

I plan to stay 2 nights in Tamarindo, 3 nights in Arenal and 3 nights in Monteverde. I have booked a compact Hyundia car. Is this car okay to drive around to places I just mentioned? Or Do I need a bigger car?

        Thanks

          Hi Abu,

That’s awesome, I’m glad our blog has helped. The road to Monteverde is quite bumpy, we have seen sedans drive it but you will have to go very very slow and careful. I would actually recommend getting a bigger car to be more comfortable because it’ll be a bumpy ride, especially in a compact. Arenal has pretty good roads, the road into the national park is unpaved but everywhere else is pretty good. Tamarindo has nicely paved roads but if you’re visiting Avellanas or Hacienda Pinilla, that is a very bumpy road with a ton of pot holes. But the Tamarindo area has paved roads until you get to the back roads to Langosta, it is unpaved but not that bad.

    Hey guys!

Your website has been instrumental in planning our trip to CR! We are flying into SJO and are planning on requesting the airport pickup. Do they bring the car to us at the airport or do they pick us up and drive us to their office? Do you think this is the smartest way to rent a car? I’m wondering if it would be smarter to get a bus to one of Adobe’s rental office in Cartago so that we don’t have to worry about getting lost and dealing with driving in traffic right when we land. (We land on Wednesday, March 22 at 1pm.) Would Adobe pick us up from the airport and drive us to the Cartago rental car office?

I’m also concerned about the scam of one of the tires getting flat and “helpful” people coming to help only to take our car with all our stuff in it. I’ve read that this happens in CR. Is it more likely to happen with certain rental car companies over others, and about how likely/often would you say it happens?

Thanks so much and keep going with all the great helpful articles!

Hi Kennedy! For the airport pick up, they bring the car to the airport and you’ll do all the paperwork there. Most people prefer to go to their office as it’s more comfortable though. Adobe has a free shuttle pick up and drop off from the airport to their office in San Jose so you don’t need to get a bus, they will pick you up right outside the airport. At the office, you’ll do the paperwork and from there, you can head to your hotel in Cartago. This way is actually easier than taking the bus to Cartago, as there aren’t direct buses to their office in Cartago, you’ll have to switch buses and it’ll be really confusing and hectic especially right when you land.

As for the scams, I haven’t actually known anyone to get scammed that way in all my years here as well as Yeison. But if you do run into any trouble, Adobe has a 24 hour emergency line you can call and always call 911 first, don’t accept anyone’s help. With our discount, you get a free local cell phone with calls and texts. 911 has an English line. People in Costa Rica are generally very nice and super helpful to tourists, but there is that occasional rotten egg.

Last time I rented a car in San Jose it turned out to be a billing nightmare! Not only did they charge my credit card the deposit that was just to hold the vehicle, they did it twice! Furthermore, once I arrived at the downtown rental agency I had to pay a government tax or fee of close to$10. per day. This trip I’m toying with the idea of getting a rental at the airport – in researching costs for this I have not come across that fee. Is this because (a) that fee is not applicable from airport rentals, (b) the fee was abolished after June 2014 or (c) I got ripped off more than I realized or (d) something I haven’t considered?
I’m about to look at your deal and am wondering if it is available to someone from Canada.
    Thanks!

I am so sorry to heard what happened to you, we have heard similar stories from Multinational rent a car companies based here in Costa Rica. Regarding your question the deal is valid for everyone just choose the dates and location time and you will see all the available cars.

One of the reasons why we recommend Adobe is because wherever amount shows on the reservation it’s the amount you will pay and we can guarantee that you will not get any hidden fees. Hundreds of our readers have used Adobe and no body have had a problem with extra hidden charges we will never let happen.

Please let us know if you have any questions 🙂

Hi, Sarah can you email us what kind of car you are looking for need and dates to our email on our contact page Some dates on December are already full so if you don’t see any cars showing it means that they don’t have available cars on the system but they have some car that are not on the online system.

I used the widget to reserve a car, but after hitting “reserve” I was transferred to the main site for adobe instead of getting any sort of confirmation. How do I know if this request went through? I don’t want to reserve it again if it did and end up getting double charged.
    Thanks!
