Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park is one of the "must dos" in La Fortuna for those who wish to walk through the tropical rainforest.
Their 3.2 km (2 mile) trail with 10 fixed bridges and 6 suspended bridges offers unforgettable views of Arenal Volcano and the tropical rainforest.
Their highest bridge standing at 148 ft or 45 meters allowed visitors to stroll through the rainforest canopy, for birds eye views into the trees.
This 600 acre or 242 hectare private reserve is home to a plethora of wildlife, such as spider monkeys, howler monkeys, snakes, frogs, insects and many birds.
The park's well maintained trails and carefully constructed bridges gives visitors of all ages a chance to walk among the treetops with confidence.
Opt for a self guided walk if you prefer to go at your own pace and do not care too much to spot wildlife.
A guided walk is highly recommended for those who wish to see as much wildlife as possible and would like a guide to share the secrets of the rainforest.
Birding tours are available at 6 AM every day, for those wishing to add more "Lifers" to their list, as the park is home to up to 350 species of birds.
Twilight and night tours are available for those who wish to experience the jungle from a different perspective, as the sun goes down and when night completely falls.
The park is 30 minutes from La Fortuna, no 4x4 required. Reservations are required for guided tours.

- Minimum 2 people to operate guided tours. Self guided does not have a minimum requirement.
- Flying drones is not allowed on park trails and in common areas.
- Shared and private tours available.
- No speakers allowed.
- No extraction or manipulation of plants.
- No feeding wildlife or manipulation of wildlife.
- No smoking or drinking alcohol.
- No jumping, swinging, running or any behavior that can comprise the safety on the hanging bridges is prohibited.
- Maximum 20 people allowed on one bridge at the same time.
- The park has the right to remove anyone they deem is behaving inappropriately or irresponsibly that puts the safety of others at risk.
What to Bring/Wear
- Completely closed shoes. This is mandatory. If you do not have completely closed shoes, they will make you sign a liability waiver.
- Comfortable walking clothes that wick away moisture and dry fast. A rain jacket or poncho is highly recommended.
- Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.
- Binoculars and or camera.
- Day pack with reusable water bottle. Single use plastic water bottles are not allowed on the trails.

What kind of wildlife is there?
It is possible to see howler and spider monkeys, snakes, reptiles, insects, hummingbirds, falcons, owls, jacamar birds.
Please note that wildlife is not guaranteed but the guide will do their best to find as many animals as possible.
How many people are in one group?
10 people max per guide.
How long and hard is the trail?
The trail is 3.2 kms long or 2 miles. It has some elevation but the entire trail is asphalated/concrete with hand rails the whole way.
There is a universal access and stroller friendly trail available, it is a short cobblestone trail, 250 meters long. There is also a short option - 1.5 kms long.
The only hanging bridge in the universal trail is the very last one that does not have a view of Arenal Volcano.
What happens if it rains?
Nothing! The park stays open, it is the tropical rainforest after all so there's always a chance of rain. Please come prepared with a rain jacket or poncho, waterproof shoes and waterproof day pack. In case of inclement and dangerous weather, the park may close and tours will be rescheduled.
Should I do a self guided or do I need a guided tour?
You absolutely do not need to book a guided tour. If you prefer walking at your own pace and staying with your own group, then a self guided walk is perfectly fine. There is plenty of signage so you will not get lose.
If you are interested in seeing as many animals as possible, then you should book a guided tour. For the most exclusive experience, book a private tour so your group can have the guide just for you and go at your own pace.
What's the difference between twilight and night tour?
Twilight tours start at 430 PM and night tours start at 6 PM. It gets dark by 6 PM everyday in Costa Rica so the twilight tours will give visitors a chance to catch the sunset and see the rainforest in the daylight, just as the sun sets.
The night tours will be completely in the dark after the sun has set.
There are some animals that are diurnal, which can be seen during the twilight tours. During the twilight tour, day time wildlife is starting to settle down, whereas night tours are for nocturnal animals with opportunities to see sleeping birds and mammals.
