Tortuguero is one of the best places in Costa Rica to experience nature and wildlife. Since it’s a little bit hard to get to as it sits in the Northern Caribbean with no road access, it takes a good amount of planning.
However, you can book a Tortuguero tour package that includes everything so you don’t have to worry about a thing! These Tortuguero tour packages depart only from San Jose, making it a great first stop after landing at San Jose International Airport.

Pachira Tortuguero Packages Discount FAQ
Where does Pachira pick up and drop off from?
Pachira’s Tortuguero packages are from San Jose only. They can pick up at any hotel in downtown San Jose or surrounding areas. Pachira doesn’t drop off in any other destinations, only San Jose and Guapiles if you plan to pick up your rental car after the trip. If you are picking up your rental car, please write the name of the car rental agency as your drop off location.
Pachira doesn’t pick up at vacation rentals so if you’re staying at one, you will need to find the closest hotel in San Jose to your location. We will inform you if the hotel you are staying at is included in the free transportation zone.
What is the itinerary?
*Please note schedules are subject to change depending on weather and other outside factors but this is the general schedule. For 2 days, 1 night packages, the guided walk is not included and you will do a sunrise boat tour on day2*
Day 1: Travel to Tortuguero from San Jose, check into lodge, visit Tortuguero town. Pick time approximately 530 AM to 630 AM (depends on your hotel).
Day 2: Morning or afternoon boat ride through the national park and then morning or afternoon guided walk through the lodge’s private trails.
Day 3: Travel back to San Jose, arrival time approximately 330 PM.
Please note that the schedule of activities may change depending on weather conditions. If you’re staying for more than 2 nights, then you have the rest of the days to do activities on your own, relax and enjoy the area. You can read our post about our experience in Tortuguero with Pachira for more details!
Can I Add a Turtle Watching Tour to my package?
Yes but you must book it at the lodge when you arrive and pay directly to them. We cannot add it to your package unfortunately. The cost is around $45 USD per person. Just ask the lodge’s front desk or your guide to help you schedule it.
Please note the turtle nesting season is approximately May to November.
Please remember to wear dark clothing only for the turtle nesting tour as it is at night, leaving around 5 PM.
This is the same for any other activity you would like to add.
What’s the difference between Pachira, Evergreen and Aninga?
All three lodges are owned by the same group, Pachira. All the rates are the same and they offer the same packages. However, the lodges do have a few differences.
Aninga is much smaller and more intimate. It is perfect for couples or anyone who doesn’t want to be around too many people. All their rooms are standalone bungalows.
Pachira is great for big groups or families as they have more facilities and the property is much bigger with a great pool. They have a few standalone bungalows and more standard rooms.
Evergreen has a mix of both types of rooms: standalone bungalows and rooms. This property has two sections: A quiet section they call Monkey Garden or the other section where the pool and bar is.
Does Pachira offer packages with a local flight instead of the shuttle and boat?
They only have packages with the shuttle and boat. If you’d like to fly, you can book the flights with Sansa and then book just accommodation, activities and meals with Pachira. There is a $5 USD discount per person for anyone not taking the complete transportation in or out (shuttle + boat in or shuttle + boat out). There is a $10 USD discount per person for anyone not taking complete transportation in and out (shuttle + boat in, shuttle + boat out).

Are there any hotels in Tortuguero that have A/C?
Sammi says
Manatus does
Alexandra says
Hi Sammie,
We would love to visit Puerto Viejo and Tortuguero. I am not sure what could be the best way to save some money with the rental car. Is it better to pick it up in SJO and drive to Puerto Viejo, stay a few nights, continue to La Pavona and leave it at the docks or is there a better way going to Puerto Viejo and Tortuguero (or the other way round maybe?) and go back to San Jose to pick up a rental car to continue on to Blue Falls, La Fortuna, Monteverde…
Thanks,
Alexandra
Sammi says
If you’re flying in and out of San Jose, you could do Puerto Viejo first and then at the end of the trip, return your car in San Jose and do Tortuguero at the end without the car. The best way in this case would be to book a package like the one we offer as it includes roundtrip transportation from San Jose.
Jennifer Nelson says
My husband and I would like to rent a car at the airport, spend 3 nights in Puerto Viejo. Then we would like to drive to Guapiles, leave the rental, and join your tour to Tortuguero. We would like to spend 4 nights. Afterwards, we would be dropped off at a hotel in San Jose. Is this something we would be able to do through you (the car rental and Toruguero tour)? If so, how much would it cost or should I fill out the two request seperately?
Thanks for your help,
Jennifer Nelson

Good Evening, I will be arriving to San Jose on the 17th of June. We are planning to drive to La Pavona in a rental car the following day, then leave the car parked at the port and take one of the boats to enter into Tortuguero. I was wondering if you guys offer a guided package from La Pavona into Tortuguero, maybe 3 days and 2 nights stay for a group of 5?. Please let me know if there is anything available, thank you in advanced.
Sammi says
Hi Luis, yes you can fill out the form on this page to complete your booking request with our discount. If you arrive in La Pavona on your own, you can take your own boat to meet eh group at the lodge and they offer a small $5 discount per way if you do not take the ground + boat transportation with Pachira

Hi, Sammi!
I and my wife are going to visit Costa Rica between 12-26 February 2022. We are going to be in San Jose on February 12th, 2022 in the evening and to rent a car from the San Jose airport. We would like to spend a day (february 13th) in San Jose. Between February 14th – 16th we would like to travel with you to Tortuguero. Please tell us some details: 1. Can we use our car in this travel and if the answer is YES where you should leave the car before having the boat to Tortuguero? We are going to drive to La Fortuna on February 16th. 2. How much will be our full travel between February 14th-16th? Thank you!
Sammi says
Hi Gabriel, there is a parking lot at the La Pavona dock where you can leave your car ($10 a day) but this is how I recommend you to do your trip, it’ll be easier and you can save some money on your car rental.
Land in SJO FEbruary 12 (don’t pick up car)
February 13 spend in San Jose on a tour or Uber around
February 14 – get picked up by the Tortuguero package with tour transportation included
February 15 – Tortuguero
February 16 – leave Tortuguero and get your rental car in Guapiles, the city halfway between La Pavona and San Jose where the Tortuguero packages stop for lunch. This is very common, super easy to arrange with the car rental company. Then once you finish lunch, you collect your car and then drive off to La Fortuna right away, from Guapiles it’s about a 2 hour drive.
Please read our how to get toTortuguero for more details and we also have a partnership with a local car rental company to give discounts and extra benefits to our readers and we can easily arrange the Tortuguero package with our partner Pachira and the car rental with our partner Adobe Rent a Car.

Hi,
I am planning to visit Costa Rica during X’mas time. I have been debating if I should visit Tortuguero. I wonder if I will still get chance to see turtles nesting or hatching during the time of the year? If yes, once I arrive at San Jose, does it make sense to just connect a flight directly to Tortuguero? Do I need to book a tour guide ahead of time or I can find some guide once I get there?
Much appreciate your time. I really enjoy your site as it provided so much useful information.
Sammi says
The turtle nestings normally end by around end of Sept/beginning of October so at the end of December, if you are like super duper lucky you may be able to see some babies hatching but there aren’t really any more nestings or that many babies coming out anymore. Depending on your schedule, you can check for direct flights or book a private transfer in case the flights don’t work out. There are many info centers and local guides in Tortuguero town but being Christmas time, I recommend you to pre-book everything because it’s peak season.
Sammi says
Hello Caroline, you can definitely book a transfer and if you’d like us to help you arrange your transfer from Guapiles to La Fortuna after the Pachira package, please feel free to email us at web @ mytanfeet . com and we can help you arrange it. You will arrive in Guapiles to have lunch so it’ll be around noon.
Caroline says
Great blog, really helpful in planning our trip!
After 1 night at Pachira in Tortuquero we plan on travelling to La Fortuna and would prefer transfer instead of renting a car and driving ourselves. Do you think it’s possible to book transfer from Guapiles (e.g. same drop off point as with renting with Adobe) to La Fortuna? And do you know the app. time we would arrive in Guapiles after the 2 days 1 night trip to Tortuguero?
Thanks for your help!!
