Tortuga Island Discount FAQ
How long is the day cruise?
Depending on your location, pick up is around 5-6 AM and you will return around 7 PM.
What is the itinerary for the day like?
Here is the itinerary for pick up in San Jose with approximate times.
6 AM: Pick up in San Jose
8:30 AM: Arrive at Puntarenas dock (snack breakfast)
10:30 AM: Arrive at Tortuga Island (snacks)
1 PM: Lunch
3:30 PM: Leave Tortuga Island (snacks)
5:30 PM: Arrive at Puntarenas dock

I’m a solo traveler. Can I still do the tour?
Yes! As long as the tour is running, you can join and get our discount.
I’m staying in Puntarenas. Where do I meet the boat?
Since the boat is in Puntarenas, you will meet the group at the Bay Island Cruises meeting point in Puntarenas. But if you need transportation, then you’ll need to select the San Jose/Puntarenas option with transportation.
Can I drive to Puntarenas?
Yes! If you have a car and want to drive yourself to Puntarenas, then you can certainly do that. You will have to meet them at their meeting spot in Puntarenas called Ocean Marina Costa Rica. They have a secure parking lot for you to leave your car for an extra fee. The meeting time is usually 730 AM but we will confirm the exact time you need to be there in the confirmation.
Where does Bay Island Cruises pick up in San Jose?
Roundtrip transportation is included from hotels in downtown San Jose, La Sabana, San Pedro and those neighborhoods. They do not provide transportation from Alajuela or on the Alajuela side of the San Jose Airport.
Victoria says
Hi! Planning to book this tour but need some insights! We will be staying at Shana by the Beach – should we drive (have a rental car) to Jaco’s for the pick up and which hotel in Jaco is preferred for the pick up? Also, when we are dropped off, will driving at night back to Shana hotel be safe?
Thanks so much for your help! I love you site, it’s SOOO helpful!
-Victoria
Sammi says
Hi Victoria, for Manuel Antonio, our partners require a minimum of 4 people and they have an extra fee. But you can drive to Jaco and meet the bus there and get transportation without an extra charge. The drive from Jaco to Manuel Antonio is very easy so you should be fine to drive back after the tour. We sent you an email to continue your tour booking
Alana P says
Hola! I am interested in this tour for the snorkeling. Is the snorkeling very good? We’ll be there the beginning of July. I am considering going to Uvita instead of Jaco to be able to go to Cano Island, it just adds a lot more travel – is it worth it in your opinion? Or is there a place that would have snorkeling further north. We’ll be at Monteverde before heading to the Pacific coast.
Sammi says
Hello Alan, we sent you an email with more information but basically, for serious/better snorkeling, Cano Island is much better. Tortuga Island isn’t a dedicated snorkeling activity, more of a fun boat cruise and there isn’t a marine reserve like Cano Island, you definitely see way more at Cano Island. The snorkeling session at Tortuga Island is only like 20 minutes too.
Jen says
Hi, our group is looking into different options to get to Puntarenas to then head out to Isla tortuga. We will be staying in la fortuna. Is there any tour picking up from la fortuna?
Sammi says
Hi Jen, yes depending on the number of people in your group it is possible. Can you please send us a message through our contact form, we tried to email you back via this email but it bounced
Wendy Fiering says
Hi,
My partner and I are interested in a tour of Tortuga Island on 2/9/24, leaving from San Jose. A couple of questions for you:
1) We’re going for the snorkeling and the beauty of the boat ride. We like smaller groups and having a naturalist available, when possible. We’d definitely rather avoid a boat that’s all about drinking and partying (e.g. free cocktails). Is Bay Island Cruises the right tour for us? If not, do you have another recommendation?
2) We’re staying in the Escazu area the night before and won’t have a car so will be taking a Lyft/Uber to get to a hotel for pick up. Do you know which hotel would be closest to us? And which tour would leave closer to 6am rather than 4:30am?
Thanks very much for your advice. Your website has been super helpful for us so far in planning our trip!
Wendy
Sammi says
Hi Wendy, to be honest I’m not sure if this is right tour for you because there is not naturalist guide available and the tour is a bit more of a party boat with music, a bar, and lots of city Ticos do this tour with Bay Island, especially on weekends and holidays and they like to have a good time.
Bonnie says
Hola – interested in the Tortuga boat trip for early April for two adults and one 11 year old. We are staying in Jaco – there pick up from Doce Lunas? Are there variations in the package? For instance, we don’t want the banana boat or alcoholic drinks. We’re most interested in getting to/from the island and snorkeling. Could you send me more information via email? Thank you.
Sammi says
Hi Bonnie, we’ve sent you a couple of emails about the tours you requested, please check your spam box if you don’t see them in your inbox
Nicole C Armstrong says
Can you pick up from the cruise terminal?
Sammi says
Hi Nicole, which cruise terminal?
Dennis and Lorraine Deredita says
Hi Sammi
Thnak you for responding to our email we checked and the Emerald Princess is docking at Puerto Caldera. We do not know how far the Caldera port is from the Puntarenas dock is for the Bay Island cruise.
Sammi says
Ohh that’s not too far, about 20 minutes driving.
Dennis and Lorraine Deredita says
Hello,
We are going to Costa Rica on the Princess cruise ship Emerald and will be arriving on April 26 at 7:00am and will depart at 7:00pm. The itinerary just says Puntarenas. Do you know if this is the Puntarenas dock as listed on your site or do we have to get to the dock. Is there enough time for us to get to the Puntarenas dock and get back in time to get back on the cruise ship.
Thank you
Sammi says
To be honest I am not sure, it could also be Puntarenas down by Caldera as that is a huge port. I would ask.
Liz Devaney says
Hi!
We would like to do the Tortuga Cruise on Tuesday Feb 21 for 2 adults.
Questions:
1 – can we bring our own drinks?
2- interested in beach chairs, snorkel but not banana boat. Is that an option and what is the cost
Sammi says
Hi Liz, we’ve sent you an email with more information
Meme says
Are public bathrooms available at the beach? Are there other food/ dining options available at the beach? Are beach chairs included in the tour or available to rent?
Sammi says
There are bathrooms on the beach (each company has their own bathrooms) so you’ll use the ones owned by the tour operator. There is a small snack stand owned by the local family of the island and beach chairs are included in the package
Alma says
Hi,
Thank you for all the great travel info. Does this day tour to Tortuga Island operate on Sundays? I’m planning out our itinerary and I just realized I don’t know if anything is open on Sundays. Also, any pandemic guidance? Thank you!
Sammi says
Yes! They do. And once you fill out the form, we will check availability to reconfirm.
Costa Rica doesn’t have too much of pandemic guidelines anymore except masks are to be worn indoors, every business can operate at 100% without social distancing, and on the boat, I would bring a face mask if you will be taking the transportation
Anthony says
Hello! I see this article is from a few years back. Is all of the information still accurate? Saw a few small differences on the company website.
Is the price cheaper if we don’t need transportation?
Sammi says
Yes its the same
If you have your own transportation, please choose the Puntarenas dock option – you’ll meet the group at the dock and it is a bit cheaper, you don’t get the snack breakfast included so you need to get breakfast on your own because you don’t get lunch until about 1
LeAnne says
We are staying in an AirBNB in Jaco. Would you recommend parking at a hotel in Jaco and being picked up there? Or driving to Puntarenas ourselves to see some other things along the little road trip?
Sammi says
We can set the pick up and drop off point at the closest hotel to your Airbnb in Jaco, just write the GPS coordinates or exact location of the Google Maps/Waze in the comment section and we will find out the closest hotel
Cindy Acosta says
Hi, we’re staying in Manuel Antonio, we have a rental so we can drive to Jaco and get picked up from there. What time is pickup in Jaco?
Sammi says
Hello Cindy, pick up time in Jaco is around 630 AM.
Matheus says
Can I get picked up at Holiday Inn San Jose Escazu?
Sammi says
Yes!
Chuck says
Can anyone give more information on snorkeling on this tour? Specifically are you free to snorkel as long/much as you like or is it a side trip with the guides….is so, about how long is the snorkeling activity?
Sammi says
The snorkeling is a side trip with the guides, it’s about 40 minutes total.
Sammi says
Hi Jackie, if you have a Costa Rican cedula (with citizenship), then they do offer national prices different than foreigners.
jackie says
What about if we are all nactionals of costa rica going….are these the prices for tourist?
Andrea Mignini says
Hi,
It sound amazing. My family and l will be in Coco Beach, Guanacaste from December 28 until December 31, what would be the closest pickp to us?
Thank you so much
Andrea
Sammi says
Hi Andrea, the tour company doesn’t pick up in Coco as it is too far (3.5 hours from Puntarenas). You will need to go to Puntarenas to do the tour.
Lydia Galanti says
Hi,
I’d like to know if the tours could include the pick up at Nativa Resort in Tarcoles, for 6 adults on December 30th.
Thanks
Lydia
Sammi says
Hi Lydia! Yes the Tortuga Island 1 day cruise tour can pick up from Nativa Resort and the transportation is included.
Sammi says

Laurel de Vette says
We are heading to Costa Rica in three weeks and looking to go to Tortuga Island however I don’t see any pricing on the site. Also we would be in Jaco. Is it safe to assume there is a pick up there with this particular tour?
Sammi says
Hi Laurel, you’ll see the price when you select Jaco as your pick up location, it is $135 USD per adult and $125 USD per child. They can pick up and drop off at any hotel in Jaco.
Nicole Gower says
What age is considered a “child?” Thanks!

Cynthia says
Hello! Is it too late to go tomorrow 12/30/18?
Sammi says
Hi Cynthia, sorry we require 24 hours in advance to make reservations and they’re completely booked today. Is there another day you can go?
Sammi says
Hi Helga, I already emailed you. Can you check your spam folder just in case it slipped in there? I emailed all of the details in there. Let me know if you have received it.
Helga Gilbert says
I am trying to book the Tortuga Island trip for 6 adults. I’ve tried twice and have not been re-directed to a new page, nor gotten an e-mail from you.
I do not have a PayPal account, so I need to pay using a credit card.
We are staying at a private residence in Playa Hermosa, Jaco.
Sammi says
Hi Helga, if all required sections weren’t filled out the form won’t go through. I apologize you’re having issues with it.
I will send you an email with more information.
Helga says
All required sections were filled – except for the PayPal account. I do not have a PayPal account.
I am still waiting for your e-mail with more information.
Also, what is included on the Tortuga Island tour that you recommend. I have found comments mentioning that there are no lounge chairs available in the beach, that there are no bathrooms, and that they cost extra if you want to use them.
Please send me as many details as possible. Muchas gracias
Sammi says
Hi Helga, can you please check your spam folder? I’ve emailed four times but it seems my emails aren’t reaching your inbox. Thank you.
Sammi says
Hi Valerie! If it went through you would have been redirected to a new page. If not, then all the required sections weren’t filled out.
Valerie says
How does anyone know if you received a tour request? I’ve hit submit but haven’t not received any type of confirmation that the request went though. Thanks!
Pinkie says
Hi there, if we wanted to drive into jaco from manuel Antonio and then picked up, would there be parking for us in Jaco? We would have ideally liked to have been picked up from manuel Antonio but unfortunately there are only two of us on our honeymoon 🙁
sabina says
Question whats the name of this company? Do you pick up from Hotel del mar in Jaco .
How do you find the different tour options?
whats the website?
Sammi says
The company is called Bay Island Cruises and they pick up at all hotels in Jaco. There is only one price from Jaco, all the tour information is in the form once you select your location. Jaco is $135 per adult and includes snorkel, banana boat, hiking trails and beach volleyball. To get the discount, you have to book the tour using the form on this page as we handle all the bookings and reservations for it.

Cynthia says
How much are packages from jaco and what are the times?
Sammi says
Jaco is $135 per adult, $125 per child. They run this tour Wed-Sun and pick up times are around 6 AM.

So, If I reserve the 1st package ($135) nothing else is included (breakfast, lunch, snacks, fruits, etc) but the transportation and umbrella-chair?

Hi Michelle! All the packages include the breakfast, lunch, snacks, fruit and roundtrip transportation. The only thing different are the activities on the island so package 1 is only the chairs and umbrella, package 2 is 5 drinks, package 3 is snorkeling, banana boat and volleyball.
