Description
If you love nature and hiking, then you cannot miss one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica: Rio Celeste!
Legend says that Rio Celeste receives its magical sky blue color when God dipped his brush in this river while painting the sky. Scientifically, the color appears when two clear rivers meet and their minerals react, producing the famous Rio Celeste sky blue effect.
During this tour, you'll travel 1.5 hours from La Fortuna to the national park and embark on a spectacular rainforest hike.
Upon arrival at the national park, your guide will share with you why Rio Celeste is so special as it used to be an important site for the indigenous Maleku people.
Then, your guide will lead you through the nature trails to see the waterfall and blue lagoon, cross the scenic bridge over the blue river, see the volcanic gases and hot volcanic water pools and witness the magic happen with your own eyes at the Teñideros site.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much walking is on the tour?
The entire trail inside Tenorio Volcano National Park is around 7 km or 4.3 miles. It is a linear trail so you will walk the same trail out that you did in.
The pace is moderate. You will stop at several view points to take pictures and enjoy the view (waterfall platform, blue lagoon, boiling hot spring pool, the bridge, Teñideros).
What difficulty is this trail?
Moderate. You need to be in moderate good shape and you must be able to walk on natural dirt paths with rocks, tree roots and branches. The first part of the trail to the waterfall has a varying path that goes from concrete to dirt. After the waterfall, it is all dirt paths.
To go to the waterfall, you need to walk down around 250 steps to the viewing platform and walk back up.
The rest of the trails do have some steps and elevation climb.
You cannot have any ankle or knee problems to walk this entire trail. You may bring walking sticks if you need to.
Will we see the sky blue color if it's raining?
It depends. If it is a light rain, the river stays sky blue.
However, if it has been raining consecutively for a few days or it has been storming very hard, the river may not be blue. It may be a brown or grey-green color. This occurs more commonly in the rainier months in that area, such as November, December and January.
The tour will continue even if the river is not sky blue. If you decide to cancel on your own and the tour continues running, cancellation policies will apply. We will not give a refund if the river is not blue.
Can we still hike if it's raining?
Yes. The tour will run rain or shine, but the hike will be called off if the national park closes or there is inclement weather such as floods and landslides.
When is the best time to see Rio Celeste?
The summer months such as February, March and April. July is another great month.
Will we see any wildlife?
Yes, it is possible to see animals like white face monkeys, snakes, coatis, toucans and hummingbirds.
Can we swim in the river?
No. You cannot swim or enter the river inside the national park.
What should I wear?
Comfortable walking clothes that wick away moisture and dry quickly. It's very humid!
Good closed toed walking shoes. No sandals, no flip flops, no loose shoes, no heels.
