Frequently Asked Questions
What is the tour itinerary?
Total tour duration is approximately 5.5 hours. The drive from La Fortuna to the river put in spot is around 1 hour.
You will float down the river for around 2-2.5 hours. When the float is done, the bus will drive 5 minutes to go to a local's house to stay around 30 minutes to have snacks, coffee, juice and use the bathroom.
Then you will drive back to La Fortuna and get dropped off at your hotel.
What kind of animals can you see?
Wildlife is never guaranteed, but animals we have personally seen on this tour are howler monkeys, white face monkeys, bats, iguanas, caimanas, crocodiles, otters, kingfishers, various herons, aningas, sloths, trogons, birds of prey and comorans.
Which time is better, morning or afternoon?
Morning tends to be fresher, the afternoon usually is hotter as the sun will already be very strong. Both times offer plenty of opportunities to see wildlife.
If you visit in the rainy season, it is generally recommended to book the morning schedule.
What kind of snacks are included?
The snacks are all handmade by a local family and change depend on what ingredients are in season. Some examples of snacks are handmade corn tortillas, artisanal cheese, beans, and plantain chips. The fruit juice will depend on what fruits are in season.
What is the main difference between Pure Nature and the other safari floats?
The main difference between this Pure Nature safari float and other floats in La Fortuna offered, such as the Peñas Blancas safari float, is that only our partner operates tours down this section of the Rio Frio River. With a maximum of 3-5 boats at a time, you will be guaranteed a very peaceful and tranquil natural experience.
The Peñas Blancas safari float goes down the Peñas Blancas river, not the Rio Frio river.
The drive time to the Pure Nature float is longer than the Peñas Blancas River float, which is only about a 25 minute drive. The short driving time is partly why the Peñas Blancas river float is so popular, with many different tour companies running floats on the same section of that river. The wildlife is similar on both tours.
Do I need to paddle?
No. The guide will do all the paddling. They may ask one of the participants to assist them, if needed.
There is no swimming on this tour.
How do you get on the raft? What is the raft like?
There is no dock, so you will be getting on the boat from the riverbanks. The guides can assist you if you require help. You will not need to walk into the river to get onto the raft.
The rafts are the same rafts used for white water rafting, so there isn't a roof or seatback.
Can I bring my backpack on the raft?
Yes, you can put it inside the raft during the tour but please bring a raincover or a waterproof backpack. Although it is not likely, you will be floating down a raft so there is always a possibility of it getting wet. The bottom of the raft may be a little wet or muddy.
Can I meet the group at the river?
No, because there is no parking lot and the "put in" spot is up river from when you exit the river when the float is done. The bus cannot drive you back to the "put in" spot to get your car since they need to go straight back to La Fortuna after the snacks.
