Description
Food lovers, put this on your itinerary: the North Fields coffee and chocolate tour in La Fortuna.
During this 2 to 2.5 hour activity, your knowledgeable local guide will lead you through the Costa Rican process to grow, harvest and process two extremely important crops in the country: cacao and coffee.
North Fields is a family owned and operated company with its own coffee plantation in Naranjo and its main operations center in La Fortuna. They offer visitors more than just an interactive tour, they provide an immersive, hands on experience that showcases the fascinating journey of both the coffee tree and cacao fruit, and how it turns into the beloved chocolate and coffee we know today.
During the tour, you'll walk through small coffee and cacao farms, see, smell and touch the fruit during each step of the process, and enjoy plenty of delicious tastings, making it the perfect experience for anyone who loves coffee, chocolate, farming and agriculture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the tour wheelchair accessible?
Yes. The path is fully paved and is completely flat. The whole tour takes place outdoors, but part of it is under roof, sitting down at tables. The other part is walking through the farms on the paved trail, which is only 1 km (.62 miles) long.
Does North Fields own their own coffee farm? Are we tasting their own products?
Yes and no. You will get samples of North Field's own coffee as well as coffee from other farms and brands for comparison. Their main coffee plantation is located in Naranjo, not in La Fortuna.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Yes and no. Kids all of all ages are allowed on the tour, but the tour may not be very interesting for younger children, as it is a lot of information to process. The tour is either sitting on a table for the tasting and presentations, or walking through the field to look at the coffee and cacao trees.
Older kids may appreciate the tour more and not get so bored, since they can participate in the sugar cane pressing experience and taste different types of chocolate.
When is the best time to do the North Fields chocolate and coffee tour?
Anytime! However, it is very busy during the high tourism season (December through April), so groups may be large as each group can be up to 25-30 people per guide.
From November to February, it is coffee harvesting time so you will be able to see ripe cherries and learn how coffee cherries are picked by hand in Costa Rica. Since it is harvesting time, there is more to see as the coffee cherries will be constantly harvested during this time.
During March to October, harvest season is over, so you won't see ripe cherries, but more growing coffee plants and unripe cherries. There are less processes going on, since this period is for tending and taking care of the trees but there are way less crowds during the months of May, June, September, October and November.
Is this a fast paced tour?
No. This is a very laid back, relaxed tour. The guides want to make this experience more about what the guests want to see and learn, so feel free to ask any questions at any time.
Can we buy their coffee/chocolate?
Yes. After the tour, there is time to shop at their store for chocolate, coffee and souvenirs.
