First, you'll visit La Fortuna Waterfall where your guide will walk down with you 500+ steps to get to the pool. There, you can refresh yourself in the crisp clean waters or admire the natural scenery from the observation platform.

What is the itinerary?
Normally, the itinerary is visiting La Fortuna first, lunch and then the Arenal Volcano hike. Your guide will inform you of the schedule for the day upon pick up.
How much walking is in this tour?
The La Fortuna waterfall requires around 500 steps to go down to the pool, on a network of a metal platform staircase. You need to walk up the 500+ steps to go back out.
The volcano hike is around 2.5 hours, and around 3 kilometers (1.9 miles). The trail is mostly a dirt path going through the forest and lava fields, there is little elevation and steps but you need to be able to walk on natural paths. There are free walking sticks at the park entrance which you may use free of charge if available.
Is there anywhere to stop to rest on the volcano hike?
Yes. The pace is slow as the guide will stop at various points of interest to share facts and stories about the area, and will stop if they see any wildlife.
Then at the viewpoint, you will stay there for about 20-30 minutes before walking back to the parking lot.
Do we hike up the volcano?
No. It is not legal to hike up Arenal Volcano to the crater. The hike will go around the base of Arenal Volcano, through the old lava fields.
Is the volcano hike at the Arenal Volcano National Park?
No. The volcano hike is done at a private reserve right next to the national park. It has similar trails and view points.
Can I swim in the waterfall?
Yes, if the conditions are suitable. The waterfall park staff will let the tour guide know if you can swim in the La Fortuna waterfall or not. If conditions are not suitable, please follow the rules as they are for safety reasons.
There are changing rooms and bathrooms and the tour guide will have towels for you if you decide to swim.
How long do we stay at the waterfall?
For about an hour.
What is the driving times between the places?
La Fortuna downtown to the volcano hike reserve is around 20 minutes.
The volcano hike to lunch is around 30 minutes.
Lunch to La Fortuna waterfall is around 15 minutes.
Can we see any wildlife?
It's possible to see some wildlife, like birds at La Fortuna waterfall and the volcano hike. The hike goes through lava fields and the area which was destroyed by lava, so although there is secondary rainforest, there isn't as much wildlife. It is still possible to see animals like birds and snakes.
