This half day tour is for those who want a leisurely sightseeing tour without much drive time. Your first stop will be at Irazu Volcano National Park, to see Costa Rica's tallest volcano up in the clouds. Along the drive, you'll enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding valleys below.
You'll walk a couple of short trails to see Irazu Volcano's craters and at the summit on a clear day, you may get glimpses of both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
Your next stop after descending down the mountain will be in the city of Cartago, to step inside Costa Rica's most important Basilica, the
Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, home of the yearly pilgrimage, built in 1924.
After admiring the detailed stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings, you'll head back to San Jose to return to your hotel.

What are the driving times in this tour?
San Jose - Irazu Volcano National Park is approximately 1.5 hours.
Irazu Volcano National Park to the Basilica is approximately 50 minutes.
The Basilica to San Jose downtown is approximately 45 minutes.
It says no meals are included. Is there anywhere to stop to get food?
Breakfast and lunch are not included in this tour. The tour will not stop to get food, so please make sure you have a good breakfast before you are picked up. You may bring any drinks or snacks you like.
Do the craters have water?
It depends on the conditions. Sometimes they have water, sometimes they are dry, depending on the season. The craters do not always have water.
It says Irazu Volcano is active. Is it safe to visit?
It has in the past, the last eruption was in 1994. Right now, it is active but with the fumaroles producing gases and vapors.
How long is the walk to the craters?
Not very long. The walk from the park entrance to the first crater is only about 90 meters or 300 feet on a flat concrete path. The second crater is very close by.
Do we get to go inside the Basilica?
Yes. Visitors can go inside and you can walk around the Basilica. If there is mass or if church is in session, we kindly ask that you are respectful, do not use flash when taking pictures, silence your phones and speak quietly.
