Frequently Asked Questions
Does this tour require a lot of walking?
Yes. The tour includes a 2.5 hour walk on the hanging bridges and a 1.5 hour walk around the Arenal Volcano. Total walking distance is roughly 6 kilometers (3.7 miles).
On the hanging bridges walk, there is some elevation, around a 7 degree slope. The trail is completely concrete or asphalt, with some steps.
For the volcano hike, you will be walking on mostly dirt paths with rocks and roots. There is some elevation gain and steps up to the view point. There are walking sticks available at the volcano park entrance you may borrow (if available).
Can I do this walk if I'm afraid of heights?
To do the entire guided hanging bridges walk, you must cross the bridges which have both hanging and fixed bridges. The highest bridge is 148 feet (45 meters) tall.
If you wish to leave on your own and turn back early, you will forfeit the rest of the tour and there will be no refund.
For the Arenal Volcano hike, there is some elevation and you will stop at a view point to see Lake Arenal and the volcano but it is not high in elevation.
What shoes should I wear?
You have to wear completely closed shoes so tennis shoes, hiking shoes, walking shoes. We do not recommend sandals of any kind for both of these walks.
If you wear shoes that are not completely closed, like a closed toed hiking sandal, you will have to sign a waiver saying that the hanging bridge park is not responsible for any damages or injuries from not wearing fully closed shoes.
For the volcano hike, you need sturdy and comfortable walking shoes. Since the volcano park has more dirt trails, it is best to wear a completely closed shoe.
What animals can I see?
Animals you have chances to see on the Arenal Hanging Bridges guided walk are howler monkeys, spider monkeys, eyelash pit vipers, owls, hummingbirds and toucans.
There is not as much wildlife at the Arenal Volcano park as it is the side where the lava rocks destroyed the rainforest back in 1968, but there are opportunities to see animals like birds or snakes.
Can I meet the group at the park?
Yes, it is possible to meet the group directly at the first park if you do not require transportation. After the first walk, you will follow the tour bus in your car to the second park and the lunch spot.
We will inform you of the meeting time and place. If you are late and do not meet the group on time, you will forfeit the tour and it will be a 100% penalty fee. The group cannot wait for you if you are late. There will be no further discount if you do not take the transportation.
What kind of lunch is it?
Lunch will be at the tour operator's private restaurant and it is a traditional Costa Rican lunch, consisting of rice, beans, salad and a protein. We can accommodate food allergies and/or diet restrictions as long as we are informed of them in advance.
