Frequently Asked Questions
How much walking is on the birdwatching tour?
There is not a ton of walking required as the tour will stop and go a lot, as the guide looks for birds. The trail you walk on when you reach the private reserve is a well maintained trail and depending on how many birds are seen along the way, the total length can be around 1.5 miles (2.5 km). The pace is slow.
Is the birding done in Arenal Volcano National Park?
No. The tour will take you birding along the way to Arenal Observatory Lodge, which is near Arenal Volcano and then you will also bird inside Arenal Observatory Lodge.
What kind of birds can we see?
It is possible to see birds such as Keel billed toucan, Collarred Aracari toucans, Yellow throated toucans, Yellow throated Euphonia, Black striped Sparrows, Great Currasows, Golden hooded Tanagers, Silver throated Tanagers, Baltimore Oril, Rufous tailed hummingbirds, Summer tanager, Buff throated Saltator, Great Kiskadee, Hepatic Tanager, Violet headed hummingbird, Tennessee Warbler, Red legged honeycreeper, Olive backed Euphonia, Black cheeked Woodpecker, Montezuma Oropendola, Crimson collared Tanager, Scalet thighed Dacnis, Palm Tanager, Green honeycreeper, Scarlet Rumped tanager, Ornate Crested Hawk Eagle... just to name a few!

Binoculars are not included so you need to bring your own. The guide will have a telescope which you can look through.
Is morning or afternoon better?
They are both great so whichever one works better for your schedule. However, if there is a bird or birds that you REALLY want to see, please let us know in the comments, so we can consult with the guide to advise you of the best tour time for the highest possibilities to see the bird/s.
Do I need to be a hardcore birder to enjoy this tour?
No, anyone can enjoy this tour but we definitely recommend it for someone who enjoys birds! If the guide spots any other wildlife along the way, they will stop to see them and this could be animals like monkeys, coatis, snakes, etc. but the focus will be on the birds.
If you are not interested in seeing just birds or focusing only on birds but would still like to see wildlife, we recommend the Arenal Hanging Bridges tour instead.
