This guided hike offers a unique opportunity to learn about the history of arenal Volcano and feel its power first hand, as you hike through the solidified lava fields and leftover lava rocks from the 1968 Arenal volcano eruption.
Your guide will lead you on a 2 hour hike through the Western side of the Arenal Volcano, up to a viewing area with 180 degree views of the volcano and nearby Lake Arenal. From this vantage point, you will feel the power of the volcano and see first hand how its devastating eruption completely transformed the landscape of the entire area.
This is a moderate hike with some elevation climb and steps. Highly recommended for nature lovers and for those interested in learning about the history of one of the most important volcanoes in the country.

Does this experience require a lot of walking? Do I need to be in good shape to do this hike?
The hike is of easy-moderate difficulty level as it will go through some uneven grounds on a dirt and sandy path. There is also a section that goes through the lava fields and petrified rocks. The total length of the trail is around 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) so you need to be able to walk that distance on uneven terrain.
The volcano park has walking sticks for guests to use, you may use one if there are any available and they are free of charge.
Will I see any wildlife?
As the trail goes through the side where the lava flowed down and destroyed the rainforest during the 1968 eruption, there isn't quite as much wildlife. However, it is possible to see some birds and snakes.
Is this walk at the Arenal Volcano National Park?
No, this guided walk is not inside the Arenal Volcano National Park. The tour goes to a private reserve that is right next to the national park and they have very similar views.
Will I see the volcano?
It depends on the weather and although Arenal Volcano is often covered in clouds, you will have some time at the viewpoint to wait and see if the clouds clear. It only takes a few seconds for the clouds to leave for the volcano to be clear.
What kind of shoes should I wear?
Hiking boots are not necessary. You should have comfortable walking shoes, like tennis shoes, running shoes, trail running shoes. We do not recommend sandals of any kind, as you will be walking on uneven terrain and dirt paths with rocks and roots.
