Description
The Pure Nature Safari Float offers a truly unique wildlife watching experience, as our partner is the only one to run safari floats down this section of the lush Rio Frio River. The RÃo FrÃo River feeds the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, an important RAMSAR site known for its biodiversity, wetlands, and significance as a livelihood source for local residents.
Although agriculture plays a large part in this area, flora and fauna flourish in this incredibly rich rainforest ecosystem thanks to the abundance of dense vegetation and forests surrounding the river banks.
As you float down the river on a quiet, motor-free raft with a knowledgeable and friendly bilingual guide, you'll have the chance to soak in all the sights and sounds of the tropical rainforest. At the same time, you'll learn about the importance of conservation and sustainability, gaining a deeper respect for nature and those who live in harmony with the ecosystem.
After your peaceful float down the river, you'll stop by a local house to meet the welcoming residents and try the local home made tasty snacks and natural fruit juice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Pure Nature Safari Float require a lot of walking?
No, this tour is very easy and doesn't require any exercise. You will just need to walk from the bus to the raft and get on the raft. Then at the end of the tour, you need to get off the raft and walk about a couple minutes to the local house for your snacks.
Guests do not paddle on this tour, the guide does the paddling. If necessary, they may request one person on the boat to assist them with a couple of easy strokes.
Can I bring my backpack onto the raft?
Yes, but we recommend the backpack to be waterproof a covered with a waterproof rain cover. The river is slow moving without rapids, but when you are on the river, there is always a possibility to get a little wet.
In rainy season, it is required to have a waterproof backpack.
How many people are in one raft?
The max number of adults per raft is 5. This does not include the guide, so each raft will have a total of 6 people (5 guests + 1 guide).
Is the morning or afternoon safari float better?
The morning is a bit cooler in terms of temperature. Wildlife does also tend to be a bit more active in the mornings, but the afternoon tour will end close to dusk.
For the rainy season months May through November, the morning tour is recommended due to the tendency of afternoon rains.
What wildlife can you see?
Wildlife is never a guarantee but there are always high chances. Animals you can see on the Pure Nature safari float are spider monkeys, howler monkeys, white face monkeys, two and three toed sloths, turtles, bats, otters, porcupines, iguanas, herons, aningas, kingfishers, Jesus Christ lizards, caimans and crocodiles.
Can I drive to the river to meet the tour group there?
No due to the river put in and put out spots as the safari float starts up river ad ends down river. At the end of the tour, it goes straight to the local house for the snacks and then back to La Fortuna so the tour company cannot drive you back to the start of the river "put in" location to get your car. Furthermore, there is no secure parking at the river start.
If you do not require transportation from La Fortuna, you can drive to the tour operator office in downtown La Fortuna to meet the group and get on the bus there.
How long is the drive from La Fortuna to the start of the Pure Nature safari float?
It is about a 1 hour and 20 minute drive one way.
Are children allowed?
Yes. Children with at least 4 years of age can participate.
Is food included?
No. No meals are included. After the float, you will go to a local house to try local snacks and natural fruit juice. The type of snacks change, as they use local ingredients that are in season. Some snacks may be cheese, yuca pie and plantains.
