Frequently Asked Questions
Where do the animals in the exhibits come from?
The animals in the sanctuary were all confiscated by the MINAE, the Costa Rican Ministry of Environment and Energy. MINAE confiscates wildlife that were kept illegally as pets and cannot be released back into the wild. They then donate the animals to sanctuaries such as the La Paz Waterfall Gardens to live out the rest of their lives.
None of the animals in the sanctuary were taken from the wild.
How long and hard is the walk to the waterfalls?
The trail is around 3 kilometers long or 1.86 miles, on a network of metal platforms which has steps and handrails. You need to be able to walk some steps and do a bit of elevation climb to see all the waterfalls.
The waterfall trail ends at a souvenir store that has bathrooms and there will be a free shuttle to take you back to the park entrance.
Do I need to wear hiking shoes?
Highly recommend to wear good walking shoes that are comfortable as you will be walking a bit of steps and going up some elevation. We do not recommend any type of sandal.
What is the temperature like at La Paz?
As La Paz is up in the cloud and rainforest, the weather can be rainy and cooler, around 60s° F (15° C). Please bring a rain jacket and if you do not have one, you can purchase a poncho at their souvenir store.
This area tends to rain a lot, so even in the dry season, please bring clothes for the rain. You can also bring an umbrella.
How far is La Paz Waterfall Gardens from San Jose?
The approximate drive time is 1.5 hours.
