The La Leona Waterfall tour is not your easy going, easy wandering waterfall hike. The entire journey, from start to finish, is an exciting adventure. Your trusty local guides will navigate through the dry tropical forest to take you to incredible view points of the blue colored rivers, navigate natural rock formations and wade through the refreshing river water.
Along the way, your guide will share with you the local myths and legends of La Leona, information about the local ecosystem, including the nearby volcanoes and their importance and impact on shaping Curubande as to what it is today.
Although wildlife is not the priority, your guide will point out any animals you may see along the way.
The reward at the end of this action packed trek will be well worth the effort as you enjoy a refreshing swim in the La Leona Waterfall pool.

What is Included?

- Tour must be prepaid in full to book and confirmation will be sent upon booking.
- Guests have to be in moderate physical condition with good stamina to hike in a dry tropical forest with an average day time temperature of 90° F (32° C).
- There is no emergency exit on the trail. If one person has to go back, the entire group must leave as all guests must be accompanied by a guide per the waterfall trail rules.
- You must know how to swim and must comfortably walk on uneven terrain with rocks and branches and stepping on rocks.
- This tour requires getting completely wet. You will swim in sections of the river where you will not touch bottom.
- Children must be at least 10 years of age and be able to walk the entire trail and swim on their own. Guide will assist children to cross rivers and swim into the waterfall cave.
- This tour is not for those with high blood pressure, those who are pregnant, severe heart conditions, those with knee, hip or ankle problems and those who recently have had major surgery.
- This tour is not recommended during the rainiest months of September, October and November. Please consult if you are visiting during those days. The rivers may not be blue colored if it has been raining heavily.
- Guests must follow the guides instructions and safety rules at all times. If guests do not follow the rules and attempt to go off on their own or do something that put themselves or others in harms way, they will be removed from the tour and no refund will be given.
- This is not a wildlife watching tour, this is an outdoor adventure. Wildlife may be seen but it is not the goal of this tour. Guides will not be actively looking for wildlife as the priority are the rivers and waterfall.
What to Bring
- Sturdy shoes with good grip. They WILL get completely wet.
- Swimsuit and quick dry clothing.
- Change of clothes.
- Towels.
- 100% dry bag if you wish to bring items with you during the hike. Mytanfeet, the guide, and La Leona waterfall park will not be responsible for any damages to your personal belongings.

How difficult is the La Leona Waterfall hike?
Moderate intensity as it includes hiking on uneven trails, crossing and wading through rivers and walking on rocky surfaces.
You must know how to swim and have enough stamina to hike and swim under average day time temperatures of 90° F (32° C) in dry heat.
Do we have to swim to reach the waterfall?
Yes. You will have to wade or swim in sections of the river. Depending on the time of the year, there may be certain sections where you will not touch the bottom and be fully submerged in the water.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Yes, but the minimum age is 10 and every child must be in good shape to walk and swim on their own as the trail is not stroller friendly and you cannot bring kids in a carrier.
The guide will assist children and anyone who needs help to cross rivers and swim, but children must have enough stamina to walk the trail on their own the whole time and not be carried.
Who is this tour NOT recommended for?
This tour is not for pregnant women, those who have high blood pressure, those who have had major recent surgery, those with severe heart conditions, and those who have hip/knee/ankle problems.
Can I bring my phone or camera?
Yes, but you will be getting fully wet on this tour so you can only bring it in a 100% dry bag. You must bring your own dry bags. The guides nor Mytanfeet will be responsible if any of your belongings get damaged or destroyed during the tour.
Is this tour safe?
Yes. The tour is led by experienced local guides who provide safety briefing and instructions as well as safety equipment. All of the guides know the trail conditions very well and will assist guests during river crossings and canyon sections.
Guests MUST follow all safety instructions and the guide's lead. If any guest does not follow safety instructions, such as attempting to leave the group and go off on their own, or risking the safety of themselves or any other guest, they will be removed immediately with no refund.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
Although this tour runs year round, the best time is during the dry tropical season months, December through April. The driest and hottest months are February and March and is the best time for the La Leona waterfall tour in terms of intensity. River levels are low and the trails are very dry.
During the rainy season, May through November, the tour still runs but the river levels are much higher and the waterfall and pools are much bigger, so if you have young children or older seniors, please let us know so we can consult with the local guide what they recommend for the safest option.
During the rainiest months such as September and October, the waterfall tour may not operate due to inclement weather and dangerous conditions. The rivers may not be as blue during those months and the trails can be a lot muddier.

What are the driving times?
From Liberia, the driving time to La Leona waterfall is 20 minutes.
From Coco/Papagayo Peninsula, the driving time to La Leona waterfall is 1 hour and 15 minutes.
From Tamarindo, the driving time to La Leona waterfall is 2 hours.
What should I wear?
Swimsuit, clothes that can get wet like rash guard, board shorts, work out clothes. You must have sturdy, closed shoes like closed toed hiking sandals or water shoes.
No flip flops or sandals that do not have a heel strap or toe bumper, no loose shoes.
Bring a change of clothes to change into after the tour.
Is breakfast included?
No, and you need to have a good breakfast because this tour uses a lot of energy. You won't have lunch until about 12 PM or so.
