Guanacaste Rainforest Sloth Tour (Private)

If you are staying on the Guanacaste coast and want to see the rainforest, then this Guanacaste rainforest sloth tour is for you.

As this tour is private, you'll experience the pristine and lush tropical rainforest up close and personal, with your knowledgeable local bilingual naturalist guide.

Your day begins after pick up, stopping first at the incredible Llanos de Cortes waterfall where if conditions are right, you can take a swim or dip your toes.

After this stop, you'll go to the small town of Bijagua, located at the foothills of the Tenorio Volcano. The Heliconias private reserve in Bijagua is where you will enjoy a 2 hour walk through an easy 2.2 kilometers (1.4 miles) trail, crossing a few hanging bridges to get birds eye views of the rainforest canopy.

Afterwards, you'll drive a few minutes to the next stop, a private reserve where you will do a very easy 1 kilometer (<.5 mile) walk to spot sloths, birds, snakes, frogs and other animals in the wild. Your guide is very familiar with this area and will use his expertise and knowledge to spot as many rainforest animals as possible, using their professional equipment like binoculars and scopes so you can get close views.

Lastly, you'll refuel with a traditional Costa Rican lunch at a local restaurant, before heading back to your hotel.

This tour is ideal for travelers of all ages who want an educational and easy going rainforest experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What animals can we see on the Guanacaste rainforest sloth tour?

Wildlife you may see on the tour are two and three toed sloths, howler monkeys, white faced capuchin monkeys, poison dart frogs, toucans, motmots, lizards, viper snakes, and hummingbirds.

Please note that wildlife sightings are not guaranteed but the guide will do their best to spot animals. All of the animals seen during the tour are in their natural habitat, in the wild and acting as wild animals do.

We do not promote, support or agree with places that illegally keep animals in captivity or place them in unnatural environments (such as sloth selfies, holding sloths, hugging sloths, etc.)

How long is the Guanacaste rainforest sloth tour?

The entire day day is around 10 hours, with pick up around 7 AM and return around 5 PM. Please note your exact pick up and return time depends on your hotel location and traffic.

What are the driving times?

Below are approximate driving times, which depend on traffic and your exact hotel location.

Zone 1 to Llanos de Cortes waterfall: 1 hour
Llanos de Cortes waterfall to Heliconias hanging bridges: 1 hour
Heliconias to sloth reserve: 8 minutes
Sloth reserve to Zone 1: 1 hour and 45 minutes

For Zone 2, the drive to Cortes waterfall is 1 hour and 50 minutes.
Sloth reserve to Zone 2 is 2.5 hours.

Is the Guanacaste rainforest sloth tour good for kids?

Yes, this tour is family friendly and great for kids who love walking, nature and animals.

If you have babies or infants, you need to bring them in a carrier as the trails are not stroller friendly. You need to bring the babies/infants own food and equipment.

What are the trails like?

The hanging bridges trail is around 2.2 kilometers (1.4 miles) on a trail path, crossing four hanging bridges and the rest on dirt paths, with slight elevation gain. The maximum elevation is 840 meters (2755 feet).

The walking pace is slow and the guide will stop many times to point out flora and fauna. During the rainy season, the trails may get muddy.

For the sloth walk, it is a flat, dirt path of about 1 kilometer (less than half a mile).

Do we need binoculars?

We highly recommend bringing your own pair of binoculars. The guide will have a viewing scope, but you can bring your own binoculars if you wish to see the animals with your own equipment.

Is breakfast included?

No. Please have a good breakfast before your pick up. The guide will stop somewhere along the way for a bathroom break after pick up, and you will have a chance to grab a snack, but not a full breakfast. You can bring your own snacks.
