Description
On this relaxing sightseeing day tour from San Jose, you'll visit four wonderful places to experience nature and culture.
Your first stop will be Poas Volcano National Park, sitting up in the cloud forest and home to one of the world's largest crater lakes. You'll walk to a view point to admire the crater and learn about this volcano and its active history.
Afterwards, you'll stop at the Doka Coffee Estate, one of Costa Rica's oldest coffee plantations, owned by a local family. Here you will have lunch and then partake in a guided tour of the plantation to learn all about Costa Rica's golden beans, aka coffee.
Next, you'll drive through scenic mountain roads, along strawberry farms and in the valley to reach the town of Grecia, one of Costa Rica's cleanest towns, popular among immigrants and expats thanks to its excellent year round weather. Here you will stop t the only Metal Church in Costa Rica to marvel at its red color and design. You'll also do a quick stop at the local central market.
Lastly, the tour will take you to Sarchi, the small town, birthplace to Costa Rican arts and crafts. You'll have a chance to see the biggest oxcart in the world, learn about the importance of the oxcart, and do a little shopping for a unique souvenir.

San Jose to Poas Volcano National Park is approximately 1.5 hours.
Poas Volcano National Park to Doka Coffee is approximately 45 minutes.
Doka Coffee to Grecia is approximately 45 minutes.
Grecia to Sarchi is approximately 20 minutes.
Sarchi to San Jose is approximately 1.5 hours.
Is there a lot of walking?
No.
The most walking is in Poas Volcano National Park. To get to the observation point, it is 600 meters (.37 miles) on a concrete path that does have some elevation.
There is a little walking during the coffee tour, as you walk to the different stations.
Can we go inside the church in Grecia?
Yes, you will have a chance to go inside the church to take some pictures and look at the architecture. If there is a service going on, please be respectful, quiet and silence your phones.
Do we have to buy something in Sarchi?
No, but it is a great opportunity to purchase souvenirs, especially locally handmade arts and crafts.
Who is not recommended to visit Poas Volcano National Park?
Poas Volcano is not recommended for those with heart conditions, high blood pressure, pregnant woman and who have had recent major surgery. This is because of the volcanic activity and high altitude.
Poas Volcano's altitude is over 2600 meters (8530 feet) and it has erupted over 40 times since 1828. The most recent eruption was in 2025, when the national park closed for four months due to high volcanic activity, including steam blast eruptions and ash and gas emissions.
Is there any stops along the way for breakfast?
Lunch is included but breakfast is not. Please have breakfast before you get picked up or bring food on the bus. The tour will not be stopping for breakfast.
