The trail from the park entrance to the main view point is 600 meters or about a third of a mile. It is on a concrete path, but there is slight elevation and some uneven parts of the road.
If you wish to walk to the Botos Lagoon, it is an additional 800 meters (about half a mile) walk one way, which takes about 20 minutes each way.
Can we go in the crater lakes?
No. No one can go inside the lake or close to the craters. Poas Volcano crater lake is active. Botos Lagoon is extinct but nobody is allowed in the crater.
You will go to the viewpoint to enjoy the crater lakes.
Why can some people not do this tour?
This tour is not for people with heart conditions, high blood pressure, people who have had a major recent surgery and pregnant women.
This is because of the high volcanic activity, as Poas Volcano has erupted on and off the past years, over 40 times in 1848 and in 2025, the park was closed for four months due to high volcanic activity, specifically ash and gas emissions and steam blast eruptions.
Poas Volcano is high in altitude, over 2600 meters (8530 feet).
