Learn about Costa Rica's finest coffee at the Doka Coffee Estate Plantation, one of the country's oldest coffee plantations. This will be your first stop on this day tour, and your guide will take you through the entire coffee process, from cherry to cup.

Learn about Costa Rica's finest coffee at the Doka Coffee Estate Plantation, one of the country's oldest coffee plantations.

This will be your first stop on this day tour, and you will first have a hearty traditional Costa Rican breakfast at the coffee plantation when you arrive. After breakfast, your guide will take you through the plantation to show you how Costa Rica produces some of the world's highest quality coffee, all the way from the cherry tree to your cup.

After the coffee tour, you will go to Poas Volcano National Park, which sits over 2600 meters (8500 feet) in elevation, up in the cloud forest. Poas Volcano houses one of the world's largest volcano crater lakes, which you'll see after a short 600 meter (.3 miles) walk from the national park entrance to the view point.

At the viewpoint, you'll have time to soak in the views of this impressive crater lake, with its beautiful blue color. For those who want to walk more, you can walk 20 minutes to the Botos Lagoon, to see an extinct volcano crater lake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy coffee?
Yes, at the end of the coffee tour, you'll have a chance to buy the first grade quality coffee direct from the plantation. They have whole and ground coffee available, with bags starting at $10 USD.

There is also other souvenir stores to buy trinkets, jewelry, and other items at the coffee plantation.

Is there a lot of walking on the coffee tour?
Not too much. You will be walking throughout the plantation to the various stations, to see the harvesting and production process first hand. Most of it is outdoors.

What is the Poas Volcano National Park trail like?
The trail from the park entrance to the main view point is 600 meters or about a third of a mile. It is on a concrete path, but there is slight elevation and some uneven parts of the road.

If you wish to walk to the Botos Lagoon, it is an additional 800 meters (about half a mile) walk one way, which takes about 20 minutes each way.

Can we go in the crater lakes?
No. No one can go inside the lake or close to the craters. Poas Volcano crater lake is active. Botos Lagoon is extinct but nobody is allowed in the crater.

You will go to the viewpoint to enjoy the crater lakes.

Why can some people not do this tour?

This tour is not for people with heart conditions, high blood pressure, people who have had a major recent surgery and pregnant women.

This is because of the high volcanic activity, as Poas Volcano has erupted on and off the past years, over 40 times in 1848 and in 2025, the park was closed for four months due to high volcanic activity, specifically ash and gas emissions and steam blast eruptions.

Poas Volcano is high in altitude, over 2600 meters (8530 feet).
