This unforgettable day tour, affectionately known as the combo tour from San Jose combines three amazing experiences in one day: Doka Coffee, Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens to soak in nature, wildlife and rainforest.
After getting picked up, you'll head first to Doka Coffee Estate to have breakfast and then tour one of the oldest coffee plantations in the country.
Owned by a local family that has been perfecting their craft for over 70 years, you'll get to learn all the ins and outs to growing, harvesting and processing premium Costa Rica coffee. You’ll also get to sample their freshly brewed, first quality coffee and have an opportunity to purchase some to take home.
Next, you will visit Poas Volcano National Park, established in 1971 to protect the volcano. Home to one of the world's largest crater lakes, you'll walk a short trail through the cloud forest to the lookout point to take in the impressive views of one of Costa Rica’s most iconic volcanoes.
If you're up for more walking, you can walk over to Laguna Botos Trail (800 meters or .5 miles one way) to a beautiful extinct emerald green colored crater lake.
For the last stop, you will visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a popular nature park up in the rain and cloud forest.
The waterfall gardens park also feature several fascinating wildlife exhibits, like the aviary, butterfly observatory, hummingbird garden, serpentarium, and frog habitat.
You will also see five different waterfalls, hidden deep in the rainforest but easily accessible thanks to La Paz Waterfall gardens excellent network of well maintained platforms and trails.
You will also enjoy a delicious buffet lunch at La Paz Waterfall Gardens before heading back to San Jose.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy coffee at the plantation?
Yes, you can purchase coffee from the plantation. One bag of coffee costs starting at $10 USD. They have both whole bean and ground coffee. They also have a souvenir store with other trinkets, art, jewelry and crafts.
Can we go into the crater at Poas Volcano National Park?
No. This is an active volcano crater and visitors are not allowed to go in the lake or close to the lake.
How difficult are the trails at the Poás Volcano National Park?
This trail is easy to medium. The path is mostly concrete but it does have a slight elevation climb and uneven surfaces. The main trail from the entrance to the Poas Volcano crater lake view point is 600 meters (.37 miles) on a concrete path.
If you walk to Lake Botos, it is an extra 1600 meters (1 mile) and takes around 40 minutes round trip.
Why are some people not recommended to go to Poas Volcano National Park?
This tour is not recommended for those with heart conditions, high blood pressure, pregnant woman and those who have had recent major surgery go to the crater lake, due to the volcanic activity and high altitude.
The altitude of Poas Volcano is over 2600 meters (8530 feet). Poas Volcano has erupted over 40 times since 1828, the most recently in 2025, when the national park closed for four months due to high volcanic activity, including steam blast eruptions and ash and gas emissions.
Is it a guarantee to see the crater?
No. As Poas Volcano is in the cloud forest, the cloud forest cover is heavy. It is possible that the clouds will cover the crater lake. You will have around 20 minutes at the observation point so you have time to see if the clouds clear up.
For the La Paz Waterfall Gardens Park, can we swim in the waterfall?
No, it is not allowed to swim in the river or in the waterfalls.
How difficult is the trail to see the waterfalls at La Paz Waterfall Gardens?
The trail is around 3 km (1.86 miles) and has steps and elevation. It is well maintained with platforms, hand rails, steps and guard rails. You need to be able to walk the steps and elevation to get to the end of the trail.
The waterfall trail is not stroller friendly. Babies must be in a carrier.
What are the driving times between the stops?
San Jose to Doka Coffee Estate: 1 hour
Doka Coffee to Poas Volcano National Park: 45 minutes
Poas Volcano to La Paz Waterfall Gardens: 35 minutes
La Paz Waterfall Gardens to San Jose: 1.5 hours
