When I was looking for a hotel in Puerto Princesa, I was slightly surprised at the sheer number of places available. I knew Puerto Princesa is a popular tourist destination in the Philippines though I heard many people usually don’t stay there for more than a few days.
My plan was to stay in Puerto Princesa for just two nights initially so I was looking for something mid range and nicer than a hostel. I found Blue Lagoon Inn & Suites with great reviews and a nice looking pool, and that was enough to book it on Agoda for two nights as they were having an insider deal. Someone wrote that it was the perfect luxury budget hotel in Puerto Princesa in their review which was exactly what I was looking for.
Unfortunately the typhoon spoiled our plans for El Nido and we had to stay in Puerto Princesa to keep as far away from the typhoon as possible on Palawan. Luckily the hotel had space and we stayed there for 2 more nights.
A luxury budget hotel in Puerto Princesa: Blue Lagoon Inn & Suites
The Hotel Property
The hotel property is quite nice. I really liked how they landscaped it so as soon as you enter, you don’t feel like you’re in a city at all. It almost feels like you’re in the jungle far far away from Puerto Princesa even though the main road is just a couple hundred feet away. Their lobby and check in area leads to their restaurant with the pool and rooms in the back.
When you check in they give you a welcome drink which is always a nice touch, especially right when you get off the plane wearing winter clothes!
They have an on site restaurant which we ate at a few times. The food is decent but prices are much higher than what you will find in local restaurants, but it’s still cheap when you compare it to US prices.
Unfortunately they don’t include breakfast which I was bummed about (I love when breakfast is included) but it was nice we didn’t have to go far for food when we got hungry. You can even order food at the restaurant and have it sent to your room free of charge.
This is my favorite part of the hotel. The pool. They have a good size pool with a small jacuzzi area. After being spoiled with the pools in Costa Rica, I was really missing one! It was nice to have a place to lay out and cool down from the Philippines heat.
They have a few different types of rooms to accommodate families, couples and single travelers. We got a standard room with a double bed, fridge, AC, hot water and a little table and chairs outside. The standard rooms are located towards the back of the hotel and further from the pool. For bigger parties, they have family rooms that hold up to 7 people.
Standard rooms are pretty small and so was the bed. Our room was fine for what we needed it for, just a place to relax, nothing fancy but comfortable.
If you have a larger party or want a bigger room, go for the villas in front of the pool. We took a peek inside those and they are fairly spacious not to mention they’re literally right in front of the pool.
There’s free Wi-fi that reaches all the rooms but it works best near the pool so you may have to go outside and sit on the patio to get it to work.
Service and Staff
The staff at Blue Lagoon were incredibly friendly. Everyone was so polite and always had a smile on their face. It was the first time in my life anyone had ever said to me, “Good morning ma’am!” but it was very pleasant. They were incredibly helpful and accommodating when we had to book extra nights and matched our prices for what we paid for on Agoda versus what they were advertising at the front desk.
You can also book tours through the hotel which is convenient. We booked the firefly and Underground River tour through them and they gave us a small discount.
In total we stayed 4 nights at Blue Lagoon. Although we had to stay in Puerto Princesa three more days than we wanted to, it was a nice place to spend the rest of our Philippines trip considering we couldn’t stay in El Nido. We enjoyed this hotel a lot so there was no question we wanted to stay here for the rest of our trip and we loved the pool.
A couple things to keep in mind if you want to book this hotel is to sign up for Agoda deals, you can find rooms for half price during certain promotions and flash deals. We talked to some other travelers who booked it on Booking.com or Hotels.com and it was more than what we paid, Agoda definitely gives the lowest prices.
It really almost felt like we were staying in a resort with beautiful gardens, awesome pool and a tasty restaurant with such friendly staff who were happy to help us with all our needs. We’re hoping to go back to the Philippines next year to make up for lost time in Palawan and we’ll definitely be going back here!
If you’re looking for a budget hotel in Puerto Princesa leaning towards the nicer/luxury side, this hotel is the perfect choice. When we were there it was quite busy and we talked to some people who had been coming there for years so we know it is an excellent one. We were definitely not disappointed during our stay and had a great time.
