Arenal and La Fortuna are two of the most visited destinations in all of Costa Rica and if you’re planning a trip there, there’s a good chance that you have probably already added Arenal to your itinerary.
Since this area receives so many tourists a year, there are hotels and hostels to fit every kind of traveler and budget. Many of the nice resorts and upscale hotels are on the outskirts of Arenal scattered around the volcano but if you’re looking for something in town, Hotel Las Colinas in La Fortuna is an excellent option.
We stayed for two nights with my parents in this cozy, family friendly hotel. Read on to find out why we loved it!
Hotel Las Colinas in La Fortuna
As you can see, Hotel Las Colinas is right in the middle of La Fortuna town.
As the hotel is in town, the property isn’t huge like the hotels near Arenal Volcano. However, they have a good amount of rooms and the design is quite nice.
You can enter through the lobby after you check in or go through the walkway between the lobby and gift shop. Ws you walk to the back, you’ll see rooms on the first floor where the restaurant and gardens are. Upstairs has more rooms and a lovely terrace with a spectacular view of the volcano.
Hotel Las Colinas is a certified hotel for sustainable tourism, given 4 leaves by La Comision Nacional de Acreditacion and the Ministero de Turismo through the Certification for Sustainable Tourism Program. So if you’re an eco-conscious traveler, this is the hotel to go to. They have a ton of plants everywhere, gardens and they also practice hydroponics.
Rooms are simple with tall ceilings, AC, cable TV and depending on the room you get, some have a fridge and a little desk/sitting area.
The windows of the rooms we were in faced the terrace so we had to close the curtains or else people could look in.
I know many people like to stay at the nice resorts in Arenal/La Fortuna, but staying in a family hotel owned and run local Costa Ricans gives you such an incredibly local experience. One of the things we absolutely love about this area is how nice the Fortuneños are and the staff here is no exception.
Everyone was so nice and friendly, always saying hi with a smile and willing to lend a hand with anything you need. You’ll experience the type of Tico friendliness everyone talks about.
Other things we liked:
- It’s super close to everything – restaurants, supermarkets, pulperias, the park, tour companies, souvenir stores, cafes and more. Right across the street is a terrific place called Rainforest Cafe that had the best empanadas. There is even a little spa/massage place near the entrance where hotel guests can receive a discount.
- There are blue-jean frogs in the gardens which you can tell by their “cheep cheep” noise. It was really fun to find them and get some pictures.
- They had free Wi-Fi which was pretty good and stable.
- They can help you book activities to Arenal Volcano National Park and more
A couple things to note is their parking is limited to street parking, they don’t have their own dedicated parking lot but they have a security guard at night. Pillows are a bit hard and the lighting in the rooms are a bit dim.
Other than that, Hotel Las Colinas in La Fortuna was a great place to stay for our first two nights in Arenal. We loved being so close to everything and that even though we were right in town, we could enjoy a peaceful night on the terrace with the volcano right in front of us.

Thanks Hotel Las Colinas for hosting us!
