One of the highlights of visiting Arenal volcano is the hot springs. The river that runs through what used to be a small town called Tabacon is now the source of many hot springs that have been built for resorts and hotels.
One of these resorts is the Arenal Kioro Suites & Spas and we were lucky enough to stay here for a night during our trip. I knew that this was a five star hotel, named Traveler’s Choice winner for 2013 and I have to admit, I was super excited.
I had never stayed at a five star resort before and I heard that this property was absolutely precious. Hey if it’s good enough for Bill Gates, it’s good enough for me!
Arenal Kioro Suites & Spa
Our Stay at Arenal Kioro
After a long and stressful morning of shoe hunting, we were ready to rest and relax. As soon as we went to reception and checked in, we were offered a free drink which I think is mandatory for every hotel! Gotta love the free drinks.
They showed us to our room, a couples suite and I fell in love from the first step I took into the room, spacious and beautifully decorated with high ceilings and floor to ceiling glass windows. Two balconies, one in the front and one in the back allow for complete views of the volcano and the mountains.
The room came fully equipped with a rainhead shower, Wi-Fi, all the amenities, robes and towels, separate toilet and shower areas, a desk, a daybed, several seating areas and the wildest part, a jacuzzi right in the room. With all the hot springs on the property, the jacuzzi must have been the perfect extra touch for honeymooners because of the privacy.
We were offered one free minifacial at the Neidin Spa they have on the property. After a short walk through several gardens, a restaurant and the pools, we reached the spa all the way at the bottom. They offer a variety of services such as massages, facials, body wraps, exfoliations and baths.
All of them sounded amazing, they had a chocolate massage, honey massage, lava stones, mud facials, flower baths and just about anything that sounds sweet and tasty turned into some sort of massage.
For example, the Pure Honey Delight Massage: A ceremony of pure sensuality to tantalize and delight derived from and inspired by Cleopatra’s daily ritual. Warm organic locally grown honey and sesame oil are massaged into the body; the honey is rinsed with warm milk, leaving the skin soft, supple and rejuvenated.
Ahh, just reading this makes me feel relaxed. They even have special ones for kids and romantic packages for couples.
I took advantage of the mini clay mud facial and for thirty minutes I was in bliss. They put a clay mask on your face and towels on your eyes, let it dry and then wash it off along with massaging your face. I came out smiling, happy and incredibly relaxed. I was ready for some hot springs!
Titoku Hot Springs
When you book a room at the Kioro, you are also allowed access to the Titokú hot springs. I knew that this place is much smaller than Tabacon or Baldi but for me, it was still very relaxing and enjoyable. It was actually nicer because Yeison and I were the only ones there and we got to experience every pool all to ourselves.
Unlike the other resorts, the Kioro’s hot springs are exclusive to guests which means they do not offer day passes to non-guests. There was only one other family in the springs with us but with 7 pools, we were able to hog our favorite one with a waterfall and treated ourselves in a nice hydro-massage.
After the springs Yeison and I tried the jaccuzzi just for the hell of it. Obviously the hot springs were better but heck, when will be the next time I get a jaccuzzi in my hotel room?
Breakfast and the Property
At breakfast the next morning, they had a buffet spread of traditional food in a big spacious dining area. Everything was delicious and they had carne en salsa, one of my favorites.
Unfortunately, it was so cloudy that morning that the whole top half of the volcano was covered along with pouring rain, but the hotel provides umbrellas so you don’t have to worry about getting wet while walking around.
We didn’t get a chance to check out the mini-gym or the game area but they have treadmills, bikes, and weights for those who want to work off their breakfast and a game room with ping pong and pool tables.
The service at the Kioro was exceptional. Anytime you needed something, it was so easy to find someone to help you. At breakfast one of the assistant managers stood by the serving area to greet each guest and make sure everyone was having a good time.
They have 24 hour front desk service so in case something happened in the middle of the night, you won’t have to worry about finding someone to help you, everyone was incredibly friendly and professional at the same time.
For someone who is looking for the ultimate relaxing vacation, the Kioro is one of the best places in La Fortuna to do that. With beautiful scenery all around, spacious rooms, an exclusive spa and hot springs and very attentive service, one will feel like they are VIPs.
It is expensive but it’s a luxury hotel. However they offer promotions quite often especially for Costa Ricans which we took advantage of when we stayed here.
They take their privacy and security very seriously, each suite has their own private parking and according to the staff, they’re not allowed to tell us if a celebrity has been there. They have a venue for weddings, special honeymoon packages for newlyweds and the privacy makes it a top choice for couples.
For a more luxurious vacation, the Kioro is a little paradise in itself and there is no doubt that one will have the most comfortable stay here.
