One of the best ways to see Costa Rica is by renting a car. Every day we get questions regarding rental companies, insurance and what kind of cars you can find in Costa Rica to rent.
In this article, we are going to show you what renting a sedan in Costa Rica is like. This is an excellent option for people who aren’t planning on exploring much, couples or small groups.
Renting a Sedan in Costa Rica
Before we get into detail about this car I would like to point out that most of the cars in Costa Rica are sedans. You can find SUV’s and 4×4 everywhere but the majority of cars in the country are sedans or something with a 1500 cc to 2000 cc. These cars are very gas efficient and we have nice weather most of the time so we don’t have rough driving conditions where having a big engine is necessary (like snow or deserts).
Renting a sedan in Costa Rica is a great option for small families (4 members max) or couples since you will have enough space to comfortably fit everyone and the truck is very spacious.
In the next video we will show you how a sedan looks like and how many people and luggage you can fit in.
Hey guys, in this video we are going to answer one of the most common questions we get on Mytanfeet. That question is what is the best car to rent in Costa Rica. We’re going to show you one of the cars that are commonly available to rent so you guys can see exactly what it’s like and hopefully this will help you in deciding which car is right for your trip!
The car that we will show you in this video is sedan that fits up to five passengers.
OK so we are going to look at a sedan car right now, this is compact but if fits up to five people with luggage. So it’s a little bit bigger and it comes in manual and automatic so let’s take a look inside.
This is a Hyundai Accent Blue, we actually took this car once all the way to Manuel Antonio from Coco, it was excellent. And this is back, you can fit as you can see three people in here. Yea you have enough leg space in this one, I remember I was in the back. And I’m going to pop open the trunk, actually the trunk is pretty spacious we took a lot of luggage when we went.
Alright, yea that trunk is big. I remember we fit up to six pieces but you can definitely fit more. Watch we’ll show you that in a second. You have an emergency kit in the back as always and now Yeison’s going to show us how much luggage you can fit in here. So now Yeison is going to show us how much luggage we can fit in this sedan, Hyundai Accent Blue.
Just remember this case is actually bigger than the ones we always see at the airport. Yep this is a check in but it’s very big, I will find out actually how big it is and put it in the post so you guys can get a better idea but as you can see it’s a quite large case. And ta da! You can actually still fit more stuff, you can put more stuff definitely.
Alright so that is the sedan, the Hyundai Accent Blue. It’s a great car actually if you don’t plan on going off roading or doing any 4X4 necessary stuff, this is a great car. Alot of roads are actually really nicely paved in Costa Rica, I know a lot of people say it’s not but that’s not true. So this is a great option, we took it once, we had a great time with it, it was wonderful so this is another great option. Also this is a very economical car, it’s a very good value for what it is so if you’re looking for something a little bit cheaper and you don’t need something that big, this is another great option for a car to rent.

- Automatic or manual transmission.
- It fits up to 5 people.
- In some models, rent a car companies can adapt racks on the roof for surfboards.
Where can you go in Costa Rica with this car?
I used to have a sedan and I was able to go anywhere I wanted to. There are some places where I had to be very careful like a section of road between San Jose and Monteverde. If you’re visiting the South Pacific or Osa Peninsula, this car won’t work as you need to have a 4×4 for those places.
If you are planning to go to rural places is better to do some research about their roads. If you see you will run into some “lastre” roads (gravel in spanish) it is better to get a 4×4 just in case during the rainy season.
But if you are not going to any mountains or rural areas, you can definitely rent a sedan in Costa Rica. We have driven to many places in the country with a sedan such as Arenal, Northern Guanacaste (Gulf of Papagayo/Tamarindo) and Puerto Viejo.
